Honda confirm new NSX to surface early 2012 at the Detroit Motor Show

It’s back! Honda’s amazing NSX supercar from the early 90s will be resurrected in an attempt to give the brand a halo car again.

The Honda NSX was undoubtedly one of the best supercars of all time. Developed by Honda in the late 80s and released in 1990, it was a mid-engined, rear-wheel drive, car which was the first to have a full aluminium monocoque body. Honda was desperate to get the V6 powered supercar right, and employed Japanese F1 driver Satoru Nakajimi to help with development as well as multiple American CART Champion Bobby Rahal.

That in itself is quite a cool fun fact, but Honda didn’t stop there. It then brought in three-time F1 World Champion and perhaps the greatest driver of all-time, Ayrton Senna, to develop the car further. He tested it at length around the Suzuka Circuit and insisted on multiple changes.

The result was a car that won Wheels Car of the Year in 1991 and a car that still raced in the Japanese Super GT championship up until 2009.

Details on the new NSX are non-existent other than you will see it for the first time at the Detroit Motor Show next year. While you wait, have a look at Senna driving an original around Suzuka.
