Backcountry Boiler is a compact water boiling solution for hikers

Access to fresh water is always one of the biggest challenges for serious bushwalkers. The Backcountry Boiler is a portable container that lets you boil water efficiently using sticks and twigs you find on your trek.

Starting life as a Kickstarter project, the Backcountry Boiler weighs just 270 grams and doubles as a canteen. Based on traditional chimney kettles from the Second World War, it takes roughly five minutes to boil about 500ml of water, depending on the fuel and user proficiency. Because it uses natural fuel, there’s no need to carry around gas or other chemical based burners in order to boil water.

The project smashed its funding goal on Kickstarter in the middle of last year, with the project soon becoming available for pre-order. It’s expected to cost around the $US100 mark.
