Ponting, not Warner, back in as Australian One Day Captain

Ricky Ponting will become the first man in 29 years to regain the captaincy of the Australian cricket team after he was chosen over vice-captain David Warner to lead the one day squad as it faces Sri Lanka in Sydney this Friday. It’s been ten months since Ponting stood down as skipper following Australia’s loss in the World Cup, but with Michael Clarke out injured, the selection panel led by John Inverarity believed that he was better placed to lead the team than the current vice-captain, Warner, who is still relatively new to the elite level.

The move has been condemned by cricket great Steve Waugh, who told the SMH, ”Ricky will do it blindfolded but the future is probably David Warner, so I’m surprised they didn’t go to Warner. Maybe they think Dave is not quite ready – but then why is he vice-captain?”

Inverarity said through a statement, “‘David Warner is a young player making his way,” Inverarity said in a statement yesterday. ”He displays considerable leadership potential, but the NSP [national selection panel] is of the view that he should not, at this moment, have the added responsibility of captaincy.”

As Waugh pointed out though, shouldn’t Cricket Australia be promoting the future rather than the past?
