Telstra has today revealed the pricing for its much-anticipated AFL offering for the 2012 season which kicks off in just a few weeks, allowing you to watch the AFL anywhere you want live on your mobile phone.
The basic details are pretty simple – every round of the 2012 premiership season can be viewed live on Telstra NextG and 4G phones and tablets, and via Foxtel on T-Box or Foxtel from Telstra services. $10 a month is all you’ll need to pay to watch the AFL live on the AFL official app on 4G or NextG phones which will give you live streaming for the month, full match replays on demand and the AFL TV channel.
The AFL Live official app is free to download, and while streaming and video comes at a price the app itself does include score updates, radio streams, team lists and player profiles. If you’re in for the season, a season pass will cost $50 and give you live streaming of every match, full match replays of every game, the AFL TV channel and coverage of the Brownlow medal and finals series.
T-Box customers can get free access to Bigpond AFL TV for around-the-clock action, which does not include live games but does include the AFL Game Analyser which has been popular on Samsung TV’s among others and allows you to skip to key points in the match via an interactive timeline.
Later this week customers of Foxtel via T-Box can subscribe to every match live on the T-Box. $49.50 per month will get you 16 channels including Fox Sports AFL. And finally if you’ve got Foxtel from Telstra, its “Value Package” at $92 a month will give you access to the sports channels including an AFL Season Pass for your mobile phone or tablet – and the first six months is reduced to $77.
It’s all extremely complicated – needless to say, Telstra are out there to get a return on their long-term investment in the sport’s rights. So, what about the recent Optus TV Now court case and that effect on these plans? Well, just consider for a moment that TV Now streams (slightly delayed) live Free-to-Air TV – so there are only four games per week available let alone limited storage capacity.
