Apple app store – 25 BILLION APPS downloaded (and counting)

It’s fun to remember that when Apple first launched the iPhone, there was no such thing as the App Store. Now, just under four years since it launched, the App Store has just passed 25 billion apps sold. Wow.

The 25 billionth app sold was yet another copy of Disney’s Where’s My Water, just one of more than 550,000 apps available on the store to download or purchase. It was purchased by Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China, who received a $US10,000 iTunes gift card.

In the three and a half years it took to sell 25 billion apps, Apple paid out over $US4 billion to developers. Given that Apple takes a 30 per cent cut of every sale, it’s clear to see why Apple is now one of the world’s most valuable companies.

Say what you want about Apple’s closed ecosystem and iTunes, it’s a money maker for the Cupertino company…
