Toyota Hilux the hottest selling car in April

Diesel guzzling SUVs may have been the most popular type of cars purchased last month by Australians, but the number one vehicle was a little more manly – the Toyota Hilux.

With 79,097 vehicles sold across the country last month, the trend for families to go for the faux-4WD people mover category continued, with 21,841 SUVs sold. Even more interesting was the growth of diesel-powered SUVs, which jumped up 56 per cent over the same month last year.

But the real victory of the month went to Toyota, which beat the Mazda3 to the most popular vehicle gong with 3,565 sales. The victory is the sixth time Toyota has taken out top honours, and is the only ute to do so.

It also drove Toyota to the best selling manufacturer mantle, with over 16,500 cars sold, wiping away a second place Mazda with just over 7,600 sales.
