RIP Note 7: Samsung ends production of the Galaxy Note 7

After a shocking couple of Months, Samsung has tonight announced the Note 7 is no more – production has been halted.

Announced in New York on August 3rd, the device went on Sale in Australia on August 19.

Just weeks before Apple’s iPhone 7 announcement, this was meant to be the device that took the shine off Apple in this second half of the year before Samsung’s next flagship phone the Galaxy S8 is announced in March.

Not a few weeks later on September 2nd Samsung was forced to initiate a global recall of 2.5 million devices after over 30 devices caught fire while charging.

After pushing through the challenging recall process, replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices were made available to owners on September 20.

This week, reports of replacement devices overheating and burning was the final nail in the coffin.

Telcos “paused sales” and Samsung urged customers to turn the devices off.

Tonight, according to Al Jezeera and others, Samsung issued the following statement:

We recently readjusted the production volume for thorough investigation and quality control, but putting consumer safety as top priority, we have reached a final decision to halt production of Galaxy Note 7s

That’s a bloody tough call, but it had to be made – and not just for the Note 7, Samsung really cannot bring back the Note brand – doing so will simply rehash the Note fire story.

The Note is no more, a device many loved and flocked to each year is gone, and we suspect in March next year Samsung will bring many of its features to the S8 range to bring it into the flagship family.
