Talk about having the cash to throw around, the Shannons Sydney Autumn Auction set new records for a bunch of items that will have your eyes watering.
A little bit close to my heart, a simple number plate went for $750,000. Number 29 it was – now my dad had the number plate “TL 029” so the number 29 has always been “my number” – not that I ever thought I’d bid on this one.
Expectations had this placed at $500,000 – but an extra quarter of a million dipped in and it went under the hammer for $745,000.
Just as dear to my heart as a child of the Godzilla era Touring Cars, a stunning 1991 Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R coupe set a new record Auction price of $91,000. This car was Australian delivered and in original condition.
Porsche lovers would have enjoyed the restored 1964 Porsche 356C Coupe brought the second-best vehicle result on the night, selling for $137,000, while a very slick looking 1982 Mercedes Benz 380SL hit $67,000.
Shannons National Auction Manager Christophe Boribon seemed pleased “We are seeing increasing demand for quality classic vehicles with good provenance, particularly 1980s and `90s former ‘supercars’,” he said. “The market is strong, but still growing for these vehicles as top examples become harder to find.”
