Apple developer earnings hit $70 Billion

Earlier this year Apple released some spectacular numbers for the App Store, and it seems those numbers are continuing to grow with Apple today announcing developer earnings had passed $70 billion.

In January the number was $60 billion earned since 2008, with $10 billion of that earned in 2016 alone.  Having already passed $70 billion it seems 2017 is going to be another record year.

“People everywhere love apps and our customers are downloading them in record numbers,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Seventy billion dollars earned by developers is simply mind-blowing. We are amazed at all of the great new apps our developers create and can’t wait to see them again next week at our Worldwide Developers Conference.”

And it’s not just outright app purchases or in-app purchases driving the growth, subscriptions are now growing for developers – up 58% year on year.

The fastest growing category?  Photo and Video – likely helped by the continual hardware improvements Apple has made to its cameras including the outstanding iPhone 7 Plus.

We’ll likely hear more numbers next week at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, though it is curious that an announcement like this would come out in the week before WWDC – could that mean we can expect even bigger news on Tuesday?

Stay tuned, EFTM will have full coverage from WWDC all next week from San Jose.
