2018 Holden Commodore pricing: German import undercuts Aussie-made predecessor

It’s been a long build up to this point but Holden has taken one final step towards the release of the 2018 Holden Commodore by today announcing the pricing for the entire range ahead of its showroom debut in February.

The car looks great, some of the early drive experiences have been reported as quite positive, but the price is critical here – take a look at the experience of Toyota. The imported Camry is now more expensive than the outgoing Australian Made model, Holden couldn’t afford that to be the case for the iconic Commodore brand.

Looking at drive-away pricing, the base model Commodore LT is just shy of $4,000 cheaper than the outgoing VF model, on RRP it’s under $2,000.

The features and inclusions in just the base model are impressive, with several huge jumps in technology and safety up the range.

Holden Commodore LT is the new name for the base model, moving up to the RS, Calais and sporty VXR.

In 2018 the Commodore comes in two body types and three variants, the “Sedan” is now a “liftback”, while the Sportwagon comes in standard and “Tourer” models (the Tourer is a “high-ride” variant).

Most importantly, and perhaps controversially, there’s no V8 and there’s no rear-wheel drive either. A 2.0l turbo engine powers the base model, with a diesel available for an extra $3,000, or the 3.6l V6 variant offering the power and performance mode many Aussies are searching for, albeit minus two important cylinders.

Looking for grip? Try the all-wheel-drive models in Calais and RS, or the all-sport VXR to tempt the previous SS owners.

LT model kicks off the pricing at $33,690, while the RS begins at $37,390. Calais trim comes at $40,990 jumping up to $55,990 for the Commodore VXR.

Standard equipment includes a 9-speed automatic transmission, push button start, remote start, the Holden Eye safety camera which enables Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assistance, Lane Departure Warnings and a Following Distance indicator – while commonplace in many cars today, Commodore owners from 5 and 10 years ago will be blown away by this stuff.

Then there’s the self-parking, rear-view camera and the 7-inch touch-screen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Kicking up into the range there’s more features like blind spot assistance, rear cross-traffic alert, a larger infotainment display, Siri eyes-free for iPhone, Wireless phone charging and the amazing LED Matrix Headlights.
