Samsung adds Airplay and iTunes Movies to 2018 & 2019 TVs

Before the first TV is even revealed at CES, Samsung has announced a feature coming to its new range and most recent range of TVs and it’s a big deal for “Apple Families”. Airplay 2 Support and iTunes Movies & TV.

While this might seem like just a parallel feature to Google Chromecast for many Apple embedded homes – those with multiple iPhones, iPads and others, the purchase of a New super smart TV is often followed by the installation or purchase of an Apple TV to ensure their existing movies and TV shows can be watched.

No More. Buy a 2019 Samsung TV, and soon via a firmware upgrade enhance your 2018 TV and you’ve got yourself Airplay and access to your iTunes video content.

This will all come via an app called “iTunes Movies and TV Shows” on Samsung Smart TVs allowing you to browse your existing iTunes Library an of course buy or rent new content from Apple.

For Apple this is a big extension of their “Services” platform, once again making money from customers who haven’t bought an Apple product. While for Samsung it’s an absolute draw-card for those people invested heavily into the iTunes ecosystem.

iTunes Movies and TV shows will also work across the Samsung TV including through the Universal Guide, updated Bixby commands and search.

With AirPlay built in, people with a Samsung TV can use their iOS or Mac devices to show videos, photos and more on the big screen.

No official word on Aussie release, but with “Spring” slated for the US release, we can expect to see this in Aussie 2019 Samsung Smart TVs as well as a progressive update to 2018 TVs mid year.

Won-Jin Lee, Executive Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics said “We pride ourselves on working with top industry leaders to deliver the widest range of content services to our Smart TV platform,”

“Bringing more content, value and open platform functionality to Samsung TV owners and Apple customers through iTunes and AirPlay is ideal for everyone.”

Over at Apple Eddy Cue was pumped: “We look forward to bringing the iTunes and AirPlay 2 experience to even more customers around the world through Samsung Smart TVs, so iPhone, iPad and Mac users have yet another way to enjoy all their favourite content on the biggest screen in their home,”
