Classic station wagons up for sale!

If you hate SUV’s and dual-cabs why not go for a station wagon, or better still a ‘station sedan’. On Monday February 18 the Shannons Melbourne Summer Auction is being held, with some very rare relics from the past up for auction. I almost feel guilty that our CES kitchenhand and Classic Car Editor “Flipsy” can’t bring you this news!

But in terms of rarity is a largely original 1964 Chrysler Valiant AP5 Safari Wagon. It’s had two owners with one of them owning it for 53 years. The Safari was getting around in the late 50’s and 60’s when the wagon culture was well and truly alive with Chrysler, Holden and Ford dominating.

With white and brown highlights the Safari is fitted with Chrysler’s 225ci six-cylinder engine with push-button automatic transmission. The trip down memory lane includes a wire-mesh sunvisor, a rear window dirt deflector, metal stone guards behind the front wheels and Pacer hubcaps. There’s no reserve on the Safari with an expected $8000 – $12,000 price range.

On the Aussie front they have a 1970 Holden HG Kingswood Station Wagon. It was purchased from the original owner almost new and has remained with a loving family ever since. Up the front there’s a bench seat, vinyl floors, brake drums all-round and a good ol’ ‘three-on-the-tree’ manual transmission. The original 161ci ‘six’ has been replaced with a reconditioned 202ci six back in the 80’s. Again, there’s no reserve but it’s expected to fetch between $14,000 – $18,000.

The Blue Oval has chimed in with a Ford XC Fairmont V8 Manual Station Wagon fitted with optional GS Rally Pack. It’s even got chromed roof a two-way rear tailgate option. Up front sits a 302ci V8 engine mated to a four-speed manual transmission. You’ll need a budget of between $22,000 – $28,000.

If you like a bit of Italian then your attention may be averted the restored, bright yellow with contrasting red interior 1963 Fiat 500 Giardiniera Wagon. You could really enjoy a leisurely weekend drive thanks to its  full-length sunroof, expect a range of $18,000 – $24,000.

All up there are 82 vehicles on sale along with number plates and memorabilia.
