How to rid your home of bushfire smoke – A quick air purifier guide.

This morning, in Sydney’s North West at Rouse Hill the Air Quality Index (AQI) registered 1321. Between 200 and 250 is considered hazardous, the highest reading for Sydney’s east was showing 687 at Rozelle. This is epic and frankly you shouldn’t be walking around outside if possible. 

So bad is this bushfire smoke, I’m sure you can smell it even when inside. I thought I’d quickly take a look at some air purifiers I’ve reviewed over time. Because the thought of breathing 11,000 litres per day of this stuff is, well, horrifying.

Dyson offers an extensive range of sophisticated purifiers that are exceptionally effective. They remove all the nasties such as Volatile Organic Compounds, (VOC’s),  Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Particular Matter (PM). My living room right now has an average reading of 80 PM2. Outside it’s around 804P M2 according to the nearest measuring station.

I’ve also reviewed the TruSens Z-2000 Air Purifier that will set you back $399.00. I have it up and running in a smaller room right now, and the PM2 figure is hovering around 13 – 20. 

The TruSens range don’t act as fans, instead they blow air upwards after it has been cleaned via Ultraviolet Sterilisation. The brand also uses a SensorPod Air Quality Monitor that sits separate to the machine.

The $529 Philips Air Purifier Series 2000 is another product I’ve looked at. With three layers of filtration called VitaShield IPS. It has three filters that remove large particles, such as pet hair. A second active carbon filter removes gases, smoke and odours. While a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter removes the stuff you can’t see, such as allergens, dust and dust mites. 

The version I’ve tested covers a room up to 79m², the 3000 and 6000 models will drain rooms from 95m² to 130m² respectively. The range is available at Harvey Norman.

But for those on a budget BIG W for example, has a great offering. Breville’s the Easy Air Purifier can cover a 24 metres squared room using a 4-stage air purification system. It uses a microbe Shield that produces a shortwave light to help target bacteria and viruses. It also uses a HEPA and Carbon to take care of odours and smoke. Right now, you can pick up one for $169.
