Apple announces iPhone SE – $749 entry-level iPhone: Power of an iPhone 11 in the body of an iPhone 8

It’s official, there’s a new iPhone in town, but it’s not the 2020 iPhone “12” or iPhone 5G – that’s still to come.

The new device is an iPhone SE, taking the name of the popular lower cost iPhone that launched in the body of an iPhone 6 but with the tech of an iPhone 6.

This time round, with an A13 Bionic chip on board, it’s the guts of an iPhone 11 in the body of an iPhone 8.

Wireless charging capable, but with the good ‘ol fashioned home button and TouchID for those who just can’t get into the world of FaceID.

Apple is calling the camera the “best single-camera system ever in an iPhone” with a 12 megapixel F/1.8 aperture camera – it’s not the wide angle we’re seeing on the more recent models, but it’s sure going to be a step up for many iPhone owners.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Marketing says “The first iPhone SE was a hit with many customers who loved its unique combination of small size, high-end performance and affordable price; the new second-generation iPhone SE builds on that great idea and improves on it in every way — including our best-ever single-camera system for great photos and videos — while still being very affordable,”

“iPhone SE features the industry-leading performance of A13 Bionic that enables great battery life, takes stunning Portrait mode and Smart HDR photos, shoots amazing videos with stereo audio, is great for games and super fast web surfing, and is built with the same industry-leading security features our customers expect. We can’t wait to get iPhone SE into customers’ hands.”

This model is aimed at getting people off their older iPhones and into something that can do the things a modern iPhone can, but without the cost.

iPhone SE will cost $749 for the 64GB model, coming in Black, White and Product Red, the price for the 256GB model is $999.

Pre-orders start tomorrow, and the device should ship from next week the 24th April.
