Supercars are back, and so is Boost Mobile with James Courtney, as 23Red Racing folds.

What a wild ride it’s been for the last two months of motorsport. We’ve had a stunning Supercars eSeries championship conducted to keep fans engaged, we saw James Courtney walk away from “Team Sydney” and this week the 23Red Team has had to walk away from the sport due to the financial pressure of COVID-19.

Sad news for Will Davidson who drove for the 23Red Team under Milwaukee colours, but with sponsors unable to continue and the team owners own business interests in limbo, it just couldn’t continue.

However, lurking in the background all this time has been James Courtney and his financial backer Peter Adderton from Boost Mobile.

Boost have been a long time supporter of Motorsport, but their presence in Supercars has been controversial at best in the last 18 months. Calling for changes to regulations to even out the grid and withdrawing from Gary Rogers Motorsport over those concerns which many saw as the last straw for the veteran team owner.

But Adderton’s passion for Supercars can’t be dismissed, and his loyalty to brand ambassador James Courtney likely the envy of the grid.

With Milwaukee and 23Red out, Boost jumped.

Adderton says in announcing the deal says he and James had been “talking to Erebus about putting a third car on the grid for a certain amount of Wildcard Races”

Tickford Racing, who run the Ford Mustang for Team 23Red were then open to a discussion with Boost Mobile. Adderton saying of course he would be interested, but critically,” whats going to happen to the staff of the team if the team doesn’t continue”

Adderton said “that weighed heavily on us in our decision to support Tickford and the Boost Mobile team.”

The Boost Mobile Racing car with James Courtney at the wheel means jobs at Tickford are saved, and that’s a win in these challenging times.

Of course, it does leave driver Will Davidson without a job, and Peter Adderton says he will reach out to Will and attempt to support him in the coming days.

Perhaps a co-driver role in the enduros is on the cards?

All of this comes as Supercars announces their revised 2020 season calendar, kicking off in Late June, but going all the way through to February with a Supercars round taking place the same weekend as the Bathurst 12 hour – what a cracking weekend of Motorsport that’s going to be!
