Sony unveils PS5 hardware with a slew of accessories

After postponing their announcement, Sony has today unveiled their new console and accessories, showing off a distinctive style that is sure to be polarising.

The hardware reveal was held until the end of their live-stream – which was mostly about new games coming to the platform – but why wait for that when you can check out the futuristic console right now. There will be two editions – one with a 4K Blu-ray drive, and a ‘Digital Edition’ without – so technically the digital edition could be cheaper, although Sony didn’t reveal any pricing today.

From close ups of the console we can see a LOT of vents on the top and sides of the unit, and it’s shown in a vertical orientation so whether you need to stand it up like that in your TV cabinet remains a question that Sony needs to answer. There’s a USB-A and USB-C port on the front of the console, but that’s about all we can see.

In terms of hardware, Sony has already announced the console will use an AMD Zen 2 CPU clocked at 2.23GHz with a custom AMD RDNA 2-based GPU with 16GB of GDDR6 RAM. Sony is also introducing a new proprietary SSD solution; Sony is requiring developers to install games on the 825GB SSD to enhance game load times, and with a projected 5.5GB/s of throughput it’s worth it.

Moving on from the PS5 console hardware, we got to see a bunch of accessories which are in keeping with the futuristic style of the Playstation 5 design. First up is the DualSense controller on a charging station – looks to be a dual charging station which is handy.

Next up we got to see the HD Video camera which will presumably be used in their Playstation VR (PSVR) on the new generation console.

Next up is an important one for gamers – at least gamers who live with other people, the headset. The Pulse 3D Wireless Headset looks good, and with Sony doing really well on their wireless headset series, you can guarantee this will be lit.

Of course when you’re not playing games on your PS5 you can also use it as a media centre – and you’ll need a remote. Sony has shown off their new remote. There’s nothing earth shattering here,

Sony is set to launch the PS5 this ‘Holiday’ season, so look to check out the hardware in time for Christmas. We’ll be checking in with Sony Australia on more information on pricing and dates, but you’ll probably have to wait a bit longer for another reveal.
