Apple’s TV+ strategy has been from the start very unique to say the least. The subscription streaming service didn’t launch with a deep catalog of content like Stan or Netflix, instead it was a small amount of high quality content.
Today, Apple announced that the Tom Hanks film Greyhound would debut on Apple TV+ on July 10.
With COVID-19 shutting cinemas, a blockbuster like this just couldn’t hit the cinemas.
The 50 million production costs have to be covered some how, so a deal was done – exclusively with Apple, and the film will be available to Apple TV+ subscribers.
No word on a wider buy and rental release, and we’d expect that to come, otherwise the cash from Apple would have been huge.
Regardless, the trailer looks outstanding:
One line in the trailer caught me thinking – “The only thing more dangerous than the front lines, was the fight to get there” and that captures what Greyhound is about.
An crew ship (many of them) crossing the ocean to reach the front lines, and they are under attack.
Written by Hanks, and starring Hanks, this is every bit the World War II movie, and the production looks amazing.
The convoy of 37 ships have five days to cross the Atlantic with no air cover, so – you can imagine the drama and action that ensues.
“Greyhound” is based on the novel “The Good Shepherd” by C.S. Forester.
Get your Apple TV+ subscription before July 10, and warm up the popcorn, this one’s a doozy.
