DJI Mini 2 launches with extended range and 4K video support

DJI has today announced the follow-up to the popular DJI Mavic Mini with the Mini 2 now available to purchase. The new Mini 2 drop the Mavic name, but adds in a number of features including better connectivity.

Like the original, the DJI Mini 2 weighs in at 249 grams which beats the 250 gram limit most countries are imposing for drone-registration, making it a good option for beginners. The Mini 2 also shares the same foldable form factor as the original, folding into a slightly smaller footprint than the original.

There’s also new features on board including support for OcuSync 2 wireless connectivity which extends the wireless range up to 2.5 times, while also making the connection more stable. DJI are talking up a maximum transmission range of 10km for the Mini 2, a 150% increase in transmission range from the original Mavic Mini.

The Mini 2 gets updated motors, which makes it faster (up to 16m/s), and flight time on the Mini 2 also gets a boost by a whole minute (to 31 minutes), and you can now fly in winds up to 38km/h.

On the camera front – why even own a drone without one! – DJI has included the same 1/2.3″ CMOS camera sensor as the original though the video resolution gets a bump to 4K/30fps, up from 2.7 K 25/30p on the original – and you still get 60fps at 1080p resolution. You can also still snap 12MP photos which you can save in standard JPEG format as well as RAW. There’s also a 4X Zoom (2X lossless in quality) option on the Mini 2, to let you get closer, without actually getting closer.

There’s a bunch of new features built-in to the Mini 2, including Helix, Circle, Rocket, Dronie return and Boomerang, as well as new Panorama options that includes wide, 180° or Sphere which stitches 26 images together to create a 360-degree image.

DJI is selling the Mini 2 for $749, or with the ‘Fly More’ combo pack for $949 which includes three batteries, charging hub, a carrying case, remote controller and obviously the Mini 2 drone itself. You can check the DJI Mini 2 out on their Australian website now.
