The new Chromecast with Google TV is one of the most compelling devices for TV viewing we saw launching this year. It’s about to get even better as a one-stop-shop for content consumption with Google announcing the dongle will soon have an Apple TV app available.
The AppleTV app will roll out on Chromecast with Google TV ‘early next year’ and will include access to your library of movie and TV show purchases from Apple, as well as Apple Original series (if you have an AppleTV+ subscription) including Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Defending Jacob and Greyhound.
The app will support family sharing meaning you can share a single AppleTV+ subscription – which costs A$7.99 per month after a free seven-day trial – with up to six family members.
The new Apple TV app on Chromecast will also support Apple Originals in your personalised recommendations and search results says Google. This means you can even add them to your Watchlist to watch later.
This is another big move between Apple and Google, with Google recently announcing you can tune in Apple Music natively on Google Assistant smart speakers. Apple has always been quite closed to Android users, but as they branch out into content, it’s great to see some of those walls coming down at least a little.
As well as launching on Chromecast with Google TV the Apple TV app will also get a broader release for Android TV. Apple has already made an Apple TV app available on Sony Bravia TVs running Android TV, but with this announcement we’ll begin seeing it on more Android TV devices…once the rollout begins.
We don’t have an exact date for the launch, but with Apple offering 4K movies in iTunes for decent prices I may have to start purchasing my movies and TV shows from Apple in the future.
