Sir Donald Bradman’s first baggy green sells for $450,000 to Rode Microphone founder Peter Freedman

Not short of a quid, the man behind the privately owned Aussie company RØDE has purchased another iconic bit of memorabilia, this time Sir Donald Bradman’s very first Baggy Green Cap!

Setting a record for a baggy green, Freedman paid $450,000 to keep the hat in Australia, and ensure that Cricket fans can see it and enjoy it.

The cap was gifted to Bradman’s neighbour Peter Dunham who lived behind the Bradman family home and it has been on-loan to the State Library of South Australia since 2003.

Auctioned by Pickles, Freedman’s almost half million dollar purchase is nothing compared to his recent $9,000,000 purchase of Kurt Cobain’s 1959 Martin D-18E Acoustic guitar.

Plans are to tour the baggy green around the country to ensure local cricket fans everywhere can get a glimpse.

Mr Freedman said “Sir Don Bradman is an Aussie legend, Not only as one of our greatest talents on the sporting field and one of the most revered athletes of all time, but as an icon of Australian fortitude and resilience.”

“All too often, memorabilia such as this ends up spending its life on the wall of some board room or in some basement bar of a well-heeled sports fanatic. I want as many people to enjoy it as possible. I have some exciting plans for the baggy green that will see it travel the country and shared with sports fans and cricketing communities,” says Mr Freedman.

What next Peter? Lawsie’s Golden Microphone? Seems only fitting:)
