We’re about to get a load of new Star Wars content in Disney+

Disney has just announced a slate of new Star Wars content during their Investor Day announcements, including a slate of new shows, and a new movie set to launch in 2023.

President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy, presented the new shows, and movie, as well as surprising with the announcement of a new Willow series and Indiana Jones movie.

Star Wars fans are getting a lot of new content, starting with a new movie – Rogue Squadron directed by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins. The movie will release Christmas 2023. Jenkins has created a sizzle reel for the upcoming movie, which she released on Twitter.

Back to the Star Wars TV Series, Kenedy announced that The MandalorianSeason 3 will arrive at Christmas 2021, so really savour those two episodes you have left in series two.

Based on the success of their Mandalorian series, Disney announced two spin-off shows: Ahsoka and Rangers of the new Republic. Both shows will be executive produced by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni who have been behind the story of The Mandalorian.

Not a lot is known about the new shows, however Ahsoka will star Rosario Dawson reprising her role as Ahsoka Tano who made her live-action debut in The Mandalorian’s second season. Less is known about Rangers of the New Republic, however Disney has said that both shows will ‘intersect with future stories and culminate into a climactic story event’.

Not in the Mandalorian time-line, but in the Star Wars universe, Lando Calrissian will be making a return in a series on Disney Plus. It’s not clear whether Billy Dee Williams or Donald Glover will be starring in the series, but a combination of the two would be great for me.

Going way back in the Star Wars universe to before even the timeline of the movies, a new series The Acolyte has been announced. Disney says The Acolyte is ‘a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era’.

For those fans of the films of Taika Waititi, a new Star Wars project is now under way, with a ‘Fresh, unexpected and unique’ take on the Star Wars universe coming from the director.

Previously announced series Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi got some news updates. Hayden Christensen was announced as returning to the role of Darth Vader for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, while Andor, based on the Rogue One character Cassian Andor will arrive on Disney Plus in 2022.

Star Wars Animation is also going forward with Clone Wars spin off The Bad Batch, based on a batch of elite and experimental clones introduced in the series The Clone Wars getting their own series. Star Wars is also going anime with Star Wars: Visions, a series of 10, short animated films.

A new series, Droid Story, will be a mix of animated and visual effects which will be an epic journey will introduce us to a new hero, guided by legendary duo R2-D2 and C-3PO‘.

Willow and Indiana Jones

For anyone who was a fan of the fantasy masterpiece Willow, you’ll be happy to know a series is on its way to Disney Plus. Set decades after the original Ron Howard film, Warwick Davis is back as sorcerer, Willow Ufgood with the series set to hit the streaming service in 2022.

Harrison Ford is donning the fedora, whip and jacket again as Indiana Jones for a Fifth, and final time, says Kathleen Kennedy. We don’t know much about the story, but the film is set to come out in July 2022.

Disney Plus

Of course this is a big grab for your attention for Disney, but as a massive fan of what Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have been doing with The Mandalorian, I’m on board.

Disney Plus is available in Australia, with access to all the Disney catalogue of movies and shows, as well as Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and National Geographic. You can grab a subscription to Disney Plus for $8.99/month or $89.99 for an entire year.
