Arlo announces new Essential Indoor Camera and Touchless Video Doorbell at CES

Continuing to grow their product range, Arlo has used the annual CES showcase to launch two new products, one camera, one doorbell, both additions to their wide existing range of products in both categories.

For those looking for an indoor camera for security monitoring, the Arlo Essential Indoor Camera is rather unique.

Seemingly moving away from describing the Arlo standard app based armed and disarmed scheduling, instead Arlo is calling their new method an “easy to control” automated privacy shield.

This allows you to choose when the camera monitors and records video or detects motion, which when off, can only be initiated by launching the app, and arming the camera, or beginning a live stream.

Without having spent time with the product or spoken to any Arlo product specialists, I’d suggest this is based on user feedback and privacy concerns around having a security camera indoors.

It’s a smart move to differentiate between the wide ranging security we seek outside our homes, and the kind of monitoring you want indoors.

For example, your Arlo camera at the front door might notify you of motion. If you then initiate a live stream from the indoor camera, you are setting it to arm mode.

In addition to the indoor camera, a new “touchless video doorbell” builds on the Audio and Video doorbells on the market offering a very different approach to the doorbell.

Instead of a visitor or courier pressing the doorbell, when they approach the door it rings with a little chime and a light turns on so they know the doorbell has been “pressed”.

In a world of COVID safe and contactless options, it’s another good one.

No doubt both will come to Australia in 2021, though exact timing and pricing is yet to be announced.
