Sony is working on a new VR headset and controller for the PS5

Sony has today announced there’s life left in their PlayStation VR platform, with work underway on a new generation designed for the PS5.

While Sony aren’t sharing pics, specs or even a name for what they’re calling the ‘next generation of VR on PlayStation’, they have said said ‘it won’t be launching in 2021.’

The 2nd gen PSVR will be simpler to connect than the gen 1 PSVR, which required several cables and additional box, with PSVR users also needing an additional cable to connect it to a PS5. Sony confirmed the new PSVR will ‘connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience’.

Sony says that with the new system ‘Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.’

There will also be a new controller for the next-gen PSVR to complement this new immersive experience. Sony said ‘One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics’.

While development is underway on the new PSVR, there’s still some life in the current gen PSVR with upcoming games like After The Fall, Sniper Elite VR, and Humanity available on PS4/PS5 with PSVR support.

For anyone into PSVR this is great news, but now we’ll just have to wait.
