Kayo to stream live local Aussie Rules, League, Hockey, Basketball and more for Free!

Getting back to basics, Kayo is looking to bring on new viewers through the live streaming of competitions like the VFL and Intrust Super Cup the feeder comps for the AFL and NRL as Kayo Freebies meaning you don’t need a paid account to watch them.

Announced late last year, the Kayo Freebie concept allows users without a paid account to watch live sporting events and many on-demand shows, while on the Kayo App or website they will also see all the other live content which effectively sits behind a paywall.

The Freebies of the VFL will include at least two exclusive VFL games per round while there will be one exclusive Saturday game per round of the Intrust Super Cup – all free to watch.

Kayo Sports Marketing Director Kim McConnie said “Kayo’s decision to stream local sports competitions aims to bring national exposure to sporting clubs all over Australia as they get back on their feet after a 2020 season drastically impacted by the pandemic.

“Local sport is not only critical to the sporting landscape in Australia, but is often the centre of communities across the country, and we are proud to give so many local leagues the platform they deserve and showcase their talent next to the elite, professional competitions.”

This brings back a broadcast option for sports that may have not seen such coverage in decades as the TV rights became far more commercial and top tier based.

AFL’s Head of Talent Pathways and State League Competitions, Tristan Salter, said “We are so excited that VFL footy is back. All 22 clubs play a vital role in keeping their suburban and regional networks engaged. They are pillars of their local communities and so important to growing and nurturing our national code.

“Kayo’s new streaming offering to state league competitions is a real boost for the VFL across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland and we know the legion of supporters are looking forward to the return of the VFL season and there is much for fans to look forward to, whether that be attending matches or watching on Kayo.”

At the QRL Chief Operating Officer, Rohan Sawyer, said “We are seeing a real shift in engagement across competitions that feed into the elite game and making that content available live and free to fans drives immense value back to our game. Kayo have clearly identified this early and we look forward to working with them on increasing this offering.”

When this all kicks off, Kayo will also be providing 50 $1,000 cash grants to Rugby League or Aussie Rules clubs in NSW and Victoria, as well as having Kayo turn up to their club in a Kayo Toyota Hilux packed with giveaways and the $1,000 cheque!

And it’s not just League and Aussie Rules, Kayo will also stream the Womens National Cricket League, Club Cricket Finals, Hockey One, National Junior Basketball Championships and NSW and QLD Golf Opens (on demand) in 2021.
