Google’s August Pixel drop features new wallpapers from Australian indigineous artist Ryhia Dank this month

Google has been adding little extras for Pixel phone owners in the monthly Android security update each month and the latest update, rolling out now, includes a trio of fresh new wallpapers created by Gudanji and Wakaja woman, Ryhia Dank.

The new wallpapers are being included as part of the celebration of the United Nations International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples – which takes place today, August 9th.

The wallpapers are live now for Pixel owners who updated to the August release under the ‘Curated Culture’ section of the wallpaper picker. Google updates their Curated Culture wallpapers at various times of the year to ‘celebrate different cultural moments throughout the year’, previously adding wallpapers for special event days such as Pride Day, International Women’s Day, Earth Day and more.

The three wallpapers are named Regenerate, Waterways and Elements and come with the descriptions below:

  • Regenerate – Endurance after burning off: “Burning off on country sees a contrast of red earth, black trees and green growth.”
  • Waterways – After the wet season: “Country has its fill of water, rivers and creeks are flowing creating new pathways.”
  • Elements – Coexisting on country: “This piece reflects People, Kangaroo Tracks, Water, Fire and Earth. All coexisting.”

To announce the arrival of the new wallpapers, Google has also published a Q&A with Ryhia, answering questions about her art, and its relationship to her as a Gudanji and Wakaja woman.

If you own a Pixel phone and have installed the latest update you should be seeing the wallpapers in your wallpaper picker now.
