Netflix wants to let you share your account – for a small fee

Sharing your Netflix account has become a very commonplace thing, however it’s always been a grey area. Now Netflix has announced a new option which will allow you and your friends or families to share an account with all the features, officially for a small fee.

It’s not coming to Australia just yet though, with Netflix first trialing the option in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, where an Extra Member can be added for around $4AUD each – which is obviously less than a full-priced Netflix subscription.

The new account sharing option will allow two people they don’t live with to be added as ‘Extra Members’ to the existing subscription, which will include their own profile. Members can also enable people sharing their account to transfer profile information to a new account or Extra Member subscription which will include their viewing history, My List and personalised recommendations.

  • Add an Extra Member: Members on our Standard and Premium plans will be able to add sub accounts for up to two people they don’t live with – each with their own profile, personalized recommendations, login and password – at a lower price: 2,380 CLP in Chile, 2.99 USD in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru;
  • Transfer Profile to a New Account: Members on our Basic, Standard, and Premium plans can enable people who share their account to transfer profile information either to a new account or an Extra Member sub account – keeping the viewing history, My List, and personalized recommendations.

There’s no plans to move forward with rolling this out more broadly just yet, with Netflix keen to see how customers in the three countries adapt to the changes. Netflix hasn’t yet spoken about enforcement either, but if it adopts the changes there may be some changes coming on that front.

Netflix currently costs between $10.99 – $22.99 AUD per account, depending on picture quality  and how many screens you want to stream on, so an extra $4 to add your mum or dad to the account is a pretty good deal and I’m keen for more Stranger Things!
