Sennheiser expand their AMBEO range with the AMBEO Soundbar Plus and the AMBEO Sub

We were blown away when we reviewed the Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar Max — and we still consider it, “by far, the best soundbar” we have used. Now a few years later Sennheiser has announced an expansion of the AMBEO range with an upgraded soundbar and a big subwoofer, the AMBEO Soundbar Plus and the AMBEO Sub.

“The AMBEO Soundbar Plus and AMBEO Sub build on the success of the award-winning AMBEO Soundbar Max, ranked by reviewers as the best soundbar in the world,” said Maximilian Voigt, Sennheiser Product Manager AMBEO Soundbars. “Thanks to the deep, immersive sound and more compact housing, our new AMBEO Soundbar Plus offers even more choices for those who want a home theatre experience with audiophile-quality sound.”

AMBEO Soundbar Plus

The Soundbar Plus is the world’s first 7.1.4 standalone soundbar thereby placing you in the centre of the action. At the same time it arrives in a much more compact housing compared to its predecessor, the Soundbar Max (aka AMBEO Soundbar — it has been renamed). Of course, the most important aspect of the Soundbar Plus is the sound it delivers — the same 3D sound as the AMBEO Soundbar Max.

The Soundbar Plus will calibrate itself based on the room’s acoustic properties, placing seven virtual speakers around the listener — plus another four overhead! The result is depth and impact of sound of that you’d experience in a movie theatre.

Being a Sennheiser product the Soundbar Plus is capable of pumping out audiophile-quality music, adapting the sound to the music being played. Of course, you can customise the sound/equaliser yourself using the Smart Control app. The speaker supports Dolby ATMOS, DTS:X, 360 Reality Audio and MPEG-H Audio with an ability to up mix stereo and 5.1 content to provide that next-level experience.

The Soundbar Plus runs on the AMBEO|OS platform which enables the use of music streaming services such as Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and TIDAL Connect. It also works with Google Assistant-enabled device with Chromecast built-in. It also has the smarts required for full integration with Amazon Alexa and Apple Siri.

AMBEO Sub

The new AMBEO Sub helps to give that immersive sound a deep bass kick using AMBEO virtualisation technology thanks to an 8-inch proprietary woofer paired with a 350W Class-D amplifier. The bass is capable of a frequency down to 27Hz, making the resultant bass audiophile-quality. Those who want to really push their sound to the next level can wirelessly connect up to four of these subwoofers.

The AMBEO Sub also offers self-calibration and a built-in far-field microphone to allow the sub to precisely adjust to the environment.

The Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar Plus and AMBEO Sub will be available in Australia and New Zealand from January, 2023. The AMBEO Soundbar Plus will be available for
