Google has taken to CES 2023 to show off the new features coming to Android Auto, announcing the roll out of it to everyone starting today.
Last year Google announced new features for Android Auto at Google I/O, their developer’s conference but of course features at developer’s conferences don’t always mean features available to all. Now though, these new feature improvements and design updates will be available for all starting today.
Google say that the new design “prioritises three important goals for drivers: navigating where you’re going, communicating with friends and family, and playing your music or podcasts.”
The new design brings Maps closer to the driver’s seat to make it easier to see your directions without taking your eyes off the road (for too long). There is a new media card to feature your favourite album art and a quick launcher to let you quickly access recently-used apps. The new split screen layout is also compatible with different screen sizes and layouts.
Google Assistant also receives some new abilities in the car and is now able to provide smart suggestions such as missed call reminders, arrival time sharing and instant access to music and podcasts.
New on-screen shortcuts will speed up replying to messages and calling your favourite contacts along with a seekable progress bar for music and podcasts (love this new feature). With new Pixel and Samsung phones you will also now be able to make calls using WhatsApp with Android Auto.

Car with Google built-in, such as Polestars and newer Volvo electric cars here in Australia, will gain access to Waze in the coming months and a new Google HD map will now be available in select cars, starting with the Polestar 3 and Vovlo EX90 to deliver precise road details to assist autonomous and assistaed driving technologies.
YouTube will also be coming to Google built-in cars in the coming months – but only if the car is stopped on the side of the road or being charged.
