Eero Built-in lands in Australia — use your Echo devices as a Wi-Fi extender for your eero network

Amazon announced that select Echo devices could be used as Wi-Fi entenders as part of an eero network two years ago.  Now that functionality has finally arrived in Australia.

As someone who has many Echo devices scattered around their house along with an eero Wi-Fi mesh network I have been hassling Amazon PR for this for a long time so was pleasantly surprised when it showed up as a notification on my eero app last Wednesday.

With eero Built-in, select Echo devices can be used as eero mech Wi-Fi extenders to boost the range of your network.  For fewer connected devices than 10GHz in the 5GHz band, the Echo devices support up to only 100Mbps, so if you have faster NBN than that I would only be using these Echo devices as a last resort to prevent dead zones in your network.

Setup is super simple, if you have your devices already set up and have linked your eero app to your Amazon account the Echo devices will simply show up in your eero app, giving you the option to use them as extenders.

Eero Built-in is available at no extra cost which is unusual in 2024 and is compatible with all current eero systems. I’ve tested it on the eero 6+ and the eero Max 7 so can confirm those two work.

The Echo devices supported include existing Echo devices in different rooms including the Echo Dot (4th and 5th gen), Echo (4th gen), Echo Dot with Clock (4th and 5th gen) and Echo Pop.  For the full list of supported devices head on over to the Amazon page for that.
