YouTube Shorts will soon no longer be short

YouTube introduced Shorts not all that long ago with the idea that short was better for more engagement. Now it seems that is changing with Shorts set to be able to be three minutes in length.

Starting on October 15, due to popular demand, you’ll be able to upload Shorts of up to three minutes long and applies to videos that are square or taller in aspect ratio. The longer videos are designed to make the Shorts more immersive and interesting to viewers.

Google is also making it easier to create your own Shorts with templates based on your favourite Shorts, allowing you to jump in on the trend and add your own spin to it. Simply find a Short you like, tap on “Remix” and select “Use this Template” to then put your own spin on the latest craze.

Google is also introducing DeepMind’s most capable model for generating video to Shorts with the AI able to bring your ideas to reality with new backgrounds and standalone video clips.

For those who aren’t a big fan of YouTube Shorts there will soon be an option to “Show Fewer Shorts.”

Google is really focusing on making inroads into the TikTok and Instagram short video dominance and is hopeful that these new tools will make creating, sharing and interacting a lot easier. Time will tell.
