AirPods Pro 2 Certified as Hearing Aids in Australia after TGA Approval

Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 16 lineup in September came with an unexpected bonus for AirPods Pro 2 users: an innovative hearing health feature. This update, however, required approval from health regulators in each country before going live.

Today, Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has given the green light to Apple’s groundbreaking “hearing test” and “hearing aid” capabilities for the AirPods Pro 2.

Originally launched two years ago, the AirPods Pro 2 have gained new functionality through a software update. With this update, users will be able to perform a TGA-approved hearing test using an iPhone and configure the earbuds to serve as hearing aids if needed.

In a statement provided to EFTM, an Apple spokesperson said, “Receiving product approval from the TGA on our Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features on AirPods Pro 2 is an important first step toward making these features available in Australia. We are working through the other necessary steps to make these experiences available as soon as possible.”

Priced at $399 or less, the AirPods Pro 2 could revolutionize hearing aid accessibility in Australia, where traditional hearing aids often cost thousands of dollars and typically require appointments with hearing health professionals. While other over-the-counter hearing solutions exist, Apple’s offering combines affordability with convenience.

Using an iPhone paired with AirPods Pro 2, users can conduct a clinical-grade hearing test. The process involves listening to tones and interacting with the iPhone, which generates a hearing assessment report. If needed, the AirPods Pro 2 can be customised to enhance hearing based on the test results.

Now that TGA approval is secured, Apple must activate these features through a future software update. Considering Apple’s regular update schedule and the fact that these features are already available in other regions, it’s likely Australian users will gain access in an upcoming iOS 18 update.
