Mercedes-Benz all-electric G-Wagon gets a $249,000 Aussie price tag

We’ve all seen them on the road, the boxy but stylish Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon. It’s iconic, and in the ritzy part of your city they are the status symbol of al status symbols on the road. Today, Mercedes revealed the all-electric G 580 model is available in Australia and the prices start at $249,000 – before on-roads:)

And before you say “no-one is paying that for a G-Wagon” – may I draw your attention to the 421 G-Series vehicles that were sold in Australia just last year? Don’t worry, Mercedes-Benz knows what they are doing!

This is most likely the most capable EV on sale in Australia, fitted with all the luxury one expects of an Mercedes, the refined drive of an EV and, the off-road capabilities of a genuine offroader, with some party tricks to boot.

I don’t think too many G-580’s will find their way into the types of places that will make use of the three-speed offroad crawn function, or put the EQ technology to the test on 45 degree slopes.

But, I do think a whole bunch of them will find a large slab of dirt to show off to their mates the almost zero turn functionality Mercedes calls G-STEERING which turns the wheels at different directions on the left and right to spin the car 360 degrees.

In a more practicle sense G-STEERING offers a significantly smaller turning circle by turning the wheels at different speeds for crazy manoeuverability.

And then there’s the power, while it might not have the throbbing sound of a V8 powered G-Series, you will get 108kW and 291 Nm of torque to each wheel!

A total system output of up to 432 kW and 1,164 Nm of torque.

The 116kWh battery gives an NEDC range of 567, we’ll wait and see what that looks like in real world comparitive testing.

Mercedes has included a modern modular lithium-ion battery in the G 580, with 216 cells across 12 modeules, it’s high energy density gives it that 116kWh storage, with a 400 volt system and 200kW DC charging.

I know it’s crazy, but I respect Mercedes most for the awesome use of the rear door storage hatch – not for a spare tyre, but for a charging cable.

Well played.

The Mercedes-Benz G 580 will start at $249,000 plus on roads, there’s an EDITION ONE model for $299,900 and plenty of options to choose from.

We’ll get behind the wheel soon to tell you more!
