Arlo playing their part in keeping seniors safe

People want to feel safe. People want to retain their independence.

This is true for everyone, particularly seniors. As my bio states I’m the elder statesman in the EFTM team so I, more than the others in ”Team Trevor”, feel I have an affinity with those who have a few more years on the odometer.

Luckily we enjoy a life relatively free from the dangers that 21st century Australia throws at us. We feel grateful that we live in a country where threats to your person is much lower than elsewhere. But we can’t simply ignore that personal security is a part of our every day thought processes, particularly for the elderly.

We live in the lucky country but some are more lucky than others. Some are blessed with a network of family to call upon to help when needed. Lucky seniors have the gifted grandchild or nephew/niece that can drag themselves away from the game console or out of bed to help elder family members tackle technology obstacles.

But what about those who not only feel vulnerable but are also alone to struggle with the countless number of devices designed precisely to help us feel safe?

Things should ”just work” but devices designed by engineers no matter how unintentionally, tend to work best when in the hands of other engineers. What is needed are products that achieve the objective of keeping seniors safe but also so simple that the thought of setup and maintaining is not daunting. It should just work.

Arlo and others like them are trying to play their part by addressing these very concerns.

They point out that their range of security devices

  1. Have the option of wire free installation .
  2. Have flexible charging options such as wired, rechargeable battery or solar panels
  3. Provide remote access for homeowners
  4. Provide remote check in by family members
  5. Possess the functionality of two-way communication for loved ones
  6. Have built-in deterrent features such as sirens and spotlights

Security cameras play a pivotal role in maintaining independence and a feeling of safety. They provide confidence. They allow homeowners to see what is at their door, on their property or near their vehicles when parked outside. They can even tell you when other vehicles are parked in your driveway through smart vehicle recognition. Plus modern AI features are emerging such as flame detection, broken glass recognition and the ability to detect other alarms alerts such as CO2 and smoke

I think we have made big inroads so that equipping your home with devices that make your life easier and safer is less intimidating. No doubt things can and will get even easier but it’s comforting to know that the senior members of our community can feel more secure in their own homes than they ever have.
