Despite growing their brand around being a leader in Drones, DJI has taken the learnings from their camera technology into a whole new market in recent years with their Osmo action and Pocket cameras. Today they launched a whole new product with a very different feel that takes aim at a viral market leader. The new camera is the Osmo 360 for 360 degree images.
DJI’s Osmo 360 aims to draw business from smaller camera brand Insta360 which has nailed the 360 camera years after they first started being a thing.
We had so many 360 cameras almost a decade ago, Samsung did one in line with their Gear VR play, even GoPro did one – but as that market fizzled away clearly the camera boffins kept tinkering away.
The most popular model today is from Insta360 and if you’re wondering how people are filming those videos of themselves riding a bike and it looks like they aren’t holding the camera? That’s a 360 camera.

DJI say it’s the first 360 camera to shoot 8K 50fps and can continuously shoot 8K 30fps continuously for 100 minutes.
“With the Osmo 360, DJI is challenging the status quo of the 360 camera market,” said Christina Zhang, Senior Director of Corporate Strategy at DJI. “We are revolutionising panoramic innovation by leveraging DJI’s long history of innovation in creative camera technology. With each technological breakthrough, from 1-inch 360° imaging with an industry-first square HDR sensor, to outstanding low-light performance, we aim to change what’s possible in a 360 camera.”
Given Insta360 have been at this for a few years now, You’d have to think DJI hasn’t just rushed to this, they’ve looked at everything they can do and took their time to be better at it.
It’s the little things, like the 13.5 stops of dynamic range, and a large pixel size, f/1.9 aperture they’ve tried to make this a great camera not just a 360 gimmick..
There’s no need for an SD card either – 105GB of built-in storage you can literally just turn it on and shoot.
The Osmo 360 works with DJI’s quick connect system for attaching to different mounts, as well as things like DJI’s wireless microphones.
At $759 it comes with the camera, Extreme Battery Plus, and Rubber Lens Protector. Pay $989 and you also get an additional battery case, quick release adapter, 1.2m selfie stick too.
And for any possible circumstance there’s optional extras – check out this list of accessories you can buy:
