Glasses with a screen the user can see for real-time interaction – Meta Ray-Ban Display revealed

We’re rewinding 13 years and doing a bit of time-travelling back to the time of Google Glass, but with a far more classy design. Meta has today revealed their “Meta Ray-Ban Display” glasses which take all the technology of the existing smart glasses from Meta and Ray-Ban and adds a screen on the glasses lens.

While wearing the Ray-Ban displays if you receive a text message you will see that message in front of your eyes. Just off to the side of your main view a bright and high-resolution display is essentially projected onto the lens of your glasses.

This screen allows you to not just see messages, but also preview photos and videos you’ve taken on the glasses while wearing them – before you share them.

And, when paired with Meta’s messaging platform WhatsApp you can also make video calls. Though, this was not shown at the event because the live demonstration failed miserably.

Critically, the glasses can also be paired with a new Neural wrist band. This band pairs with the glasses and allows you to use gestures to control and navigate your way through the screen and menu options.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated responding to messages in what looked like he was just “air writing” with his wrist on a desk but no pen in hand. A whole host of gestures will allow you to navigate the system without using your voice, and without any really overt gesture that might look strange to those around you.

Priced at $799 in the USA these will be expensive smart glasses if and when they make it to Australia.

The Meta Ray-Ban Display will join the existing Meta Ray-Bans, the Oakley Meta glasses and new iconic prism Oakley sports glasses equipped with a centre camera and the ability to pair with Garmin smart sensors for real-time information display.
