Date: 24 July 2026
Hosts: Stephen Fenech & Trevor Long
[00:01:43] Stephen Fenech: Hello and welcome to The Best Movies You’ve Never Seen, our movie podcast where I, Stephen Fenech, take a movie that I know that my co-host Trevor Long hasn’t seen before, hence the name of this show, and we talk about it. That is the show that has been going on for 5 years now.
[00:01:59] Movie Audio: Really?
[00:02:00] Stephen Fenech: 5 years in we are. Yeah, and 250-ish episodes.
[00:02:04] Trevor Long: This is our 250th episode. There you have it, boom! I just looked.
[00:02:08] Stephen Fenech: Boom, 250.
[00:02:09] Trevor Long: Including a couple of recasts, so you know.
[00:02:10] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, well, you know, it’s pretty good. It’s pretty good. This week we are talking about The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and this is explicit language warning, okay? There is some.
[00:02:21] Trevor Long: If you are a parent with children and you chose this podcast while the children are in the car, it ain’t our fault.
[00:02:27] Stephen Fenech: Okay, it was released in 2005 starring Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen. A great comedy cast. Co-written and directed— co-written by Steve Carell, by the way. Co-written with Steve Carell and Judd Apatow. Yeah, Judd Apatow directed it. Now the writing team, they did a bit of research. They were given stacks of academic studies of older virgins. Really?
[00:02:51] Movie Audio: By university—
[00:02:52] Trevor Long: doing academic studies on that?
[00:02:53] Stephen Fenech: Well, they were happy to see that most of these virgins were— virgins were not too dissimilar to their their main character.
[00:03:00] Movie Audio: Wow.
[00:03:00] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:03:01] Stephen Fenech: Now filming took place in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley between January and April 2005.
[00:03:08] Movie Audio: Okay.
[00:03:09] Stephen Fenech: Uh, was shot in Studio City, LA, San Fernando Valley, Ventura Boulevard. Yeah. Now, um, according to Seth Rogen, like Steve Carell was pretty establishing himself. Now this is according to Seth Rogen, Steve Carell was so nervous that the movie would be shut down. By the studio that he had the writers prepare a backup version of the script that didn’t contain a single swear word.
[00:03:35] Movie Audio: Wow.
[00:03:36] Stephen Fenech: So they’re worried they’re going to go, well, listen, mate, there’s a bit, you know, they had this other as well.
[00:03:40] Trevor Long: That’s amazing. Now, so this is pre-The Office.
[00:03:43] Stephen Fenech: I’ve got to— it is, it is actually. I’ve got to ask you as well, which version did you see? Now, there is a couple. There is a, the generic version, whatever came up. What was your runtime? What was your runtime? I don’t remember because there is an uncut version. I reckon I’m going to have scenes in in here that you— I’ve got it on Blu-ray and I, and it was— I owned the disc and it was, I reckon, the theatrical and the non-theatrical version. It was the director’s, like a longer cut, a couple of scenes extra, but nothing, nothing to worry about.
[00:04:12] Trevor Long: Okay.
[00:04:13] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:04:13] Stephen Fenech: So what were your impressions before? Had you seen this? Not seen this?
[00:04:16] Movie Audio: I’d heard of it.
[00:04:17] Trevor Long: I hadn’t heard of it.
[00:04:17] Stephen Fenech: Hadn’t heard of it.
[00:04:18] Trevor Long: No. Wow, mate, I don’t think you understand. I don’t just not watch movies, I don’t pay attention to the entertainment reports.
[00:04:25] Stephen Fenech: Sorry, Dickie, but this is the same bloke who sent me on, on WhatsApp a trailer thinking, what, how long, where did you Did you know about this? Well, I mean, of course I knew about this.
[00:04:33] Trevor Long: That one’s a big deal, but you’ve never mentioned it to me. Yeah, well, I thought, um, that’s, you know, that’s more of a tech question, you know what I mean? Okay. Um, yeah, no, I had nothing. And I had no idea that Steve Carell was in this because I’m a big Steve Carell fan from The Office.
[00:04:47] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:04:48] Trevor Long: Um, so, you know, this— yeah, I had no idea about this cast.
[00:04:51] Movie Audio: What—
[00:04:51] Stephen Fenech: or what— so where did you watch it? What platform was it on?
[00:04:54] Trevor Long: I just searched Fetch. I think it came up on one of the streamers, right? Like Stan. And it would—
[00:04:58] Stephen Fenech: and you don’t remember the runtime?
[00:05:00] Movie Audio: No.
[00:05:00] Stephen Fenech: Okay, I reckon I’ve watched the uncut, and I reckon it doesn’t matter because there’s the scenes that were added were just there for comedy.
[00:05:06] Trevor Long: It was 2 days ago, I’ll forget. Okay, I’ll be like, oh, that was a funny bit.
[00:05:12] Stephen Fenech: All right, now, uh, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, uh, was released theatrically on the 19th of August 2005 through Universal, grossed $177 million on a $26 million budget. That’s pretty good.
[00:05:25] Trevor Long: This movie? Yeah, that’s a lot of money.
[00:05:28] Stephen Fenech: Big, big box office hit. It’s also a big budget for it. Yeah, a lot of things going on there, mate. Okay, uh, Roger Ebert. Rog, 3.5 out of 4 stars.
[00:05:38] Trevor Long: Wow, 2 weeks in a row.
[00:05:39] Stephen Fenech: Now here’s what he said at the end of his review here. The best—
[00:05:43] Trevor Long: just stop here. I like Roger Ebert, doesn’t— I’ve got to learn more about my ratings from Roger because he doesn’t measure them against each other, he measures them on their merits. On their merits. Yes, exactly.
[00:05:53] Stephen Fenech: You can’t compare the tech review. Do you— a tech review, if you’re reviewing a Kogan TV against a Samsung TV, you can’t—
[00:06:00] Trevor Long: reviewing it on its merits, you can’t compare 40-Year-Old Virgin to Contact.
[00:06:04] Stephen Fenech: Correct, that’s right. Uh, here’s what Roger said: the best reason the movie works is because Steve Carell and Catherine Keener have a rare kind of chemistry that’s maybe better described as mutual sympathy. Catherine is an act— uh, Keener is an actress at the top of her form, and to see her in Lovely and Amazing and The Ballad of Jack and Rose and then in Virgin is to watch an actress who starts every role with with a complete understanding of the woman inside. Her task in the plot is to end Andy’s virginity, but her challenge is to create a relationship we care about, and we do. The character Trish intuitively— is intuitively understanding, but more importantly, she actually likes the guy. Keener’s inspiration is to have Trish see Andy not as a challenge but as an opportunity. The movie was directed by Judd Apatow, who produced Anchorman, and written by Apatow and Carell, The Daily Show veteran who first developed the idea of a closeted version in a Second City skit. The screenplay is filled with small but perfect one-liners, as when Andy is advised to emulate David Caruso in Jade at the end, for no good reason except that it strikes exactly the perfect, if completely unexpected, note. The cast performs a Bollywood version of the Age of Aquarius. By then they could have done almost anything and I would have been smiling. So, you know, when you— at the end, we’ll discuss that. When he finally, uh, loses it, yeah, he’s, uh, very joyous, let’s just say.
[00:07:25] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:07:26] Stephen Fenech: Uh, this is your Last Exit Before the Freeway. We are gonna take a deep dive into the 40-year-old version, so to speak.

[00:08:25] Stephen Fenech: Trevor Long has now seen a— not a biopic, so to speak, but he’s watched The 40-Year-Old Virgin. I thought I’d get him first, mate. Um, what’s going on? What were your impressions after your first watch?
[00:08:35] Trevor Long: Fun movie. Like, it’s just a fun movie. And what a cast.
[00:08:38] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, funny.
[00:08:39] Trevor Long: Yeah, dude, I recognize more people in this than I’ve ever recognized in a movie, I reckon, because, you know, I love comedy and comedies. Um, and, you know, a lot of these, you can see this is a a crew. You know, a lot of these people work together a lot, of course, I think, on different things.
[00:08:53] Stephen Fenech: Judd Apatow likes to keep a team around, you know.
[00:08:56] Movie Audio: I—
[00:08:57] Trevor Long: because we’ve moved past the freeway, I like the fact that it isn’t a movie which I kind of expected to just be a movie of him having sex 600 times or something, you know, like I didn’t know what it was going to be. Yeah. So Roger Ebert nailed it. It’s, it’s a great story of a relationship that could have just been quick and simple.
[00:09:15] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:09:15] Trevor Long: But But it was complex.
[00:09:17] Stephen Fenech: I liked it. There’s more layers to this than meets the eye. Yeah, that’s what I like about it. That’s why I reckon when comedy succeeds, it’s more than just a laugh.
[00:09:26] Trevor Long: Yes.
[00:09:26] Stephen Fenech: There’s a layer. The layers to this, I think, are quite good.
[00:09:29] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:09:30] Trevor Long: Yeah. So we’re in a good mood.
[00:09:31] Stephen Fenech: What’s your social media?
[00:09:32] Trevor Long: The 40-Year-Old Virgin is a solid comedic cast. I recognize them all, even the small bit parts. A silly premise, but a fun journey. One for a lazy Saturday night movie watch with your mates. Fair enough. That’s how I’d go.
[00:09:44] Stephen Fenech: I watched this at the movies, rewatched it a few times. At the point, at the time, like Judd Apatow and Carell, and they were sort of— comedies at the movies were really popular, right? You try to go watch a comedy at the movies now. No, like, very, they very rarely release a comedy straight to streaming now.
[00:10:00] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:10:01] Stephen Fenech: And you know what, watching a comedy with other people—
[00:10:03] Trevor Long: well, that’s why, that’s why I said Saturday night with your mates.
[00:10:05] Stephen Fenech: It’s funny. Yeah, that’d be great. Yeah. All right, let’s look at the cast. Steve Carell plays Andy, and he of course was in The Office.
[00:10:12] Trevor Long: Well, he went on to be in The Office, really.
[00:10:14] Stephen Fenech: Went on to be in The Office. This kind of his springboard into The Office. Then was in Foxcatcher, was a sort of serious Oscar-nom movie about an Olympic coach, right? Uh, he was in The Morning Show, remember the first couple of seasons of The Morning Show? Minions, you kids watch Minions? No, he’s a voice there. Little Miss Sunshine is in too, which is a really cool movie that is on our list. Kathryn Keener plays Trish. She was in Capote. Do you remember her in Get Out?
[00:10:40] Movie Audio: No.
[00:10:41] Stephen Fenech: Remember, she— remember when the, the, the white woman with the black boyfriend went out to their parents’ house out in the country and she hypnotizes, um, the, the— remember she says, okay, you’re gonna drop. And remember, I don’t remember last— she was, she was the mother, remember, stirring her, her tea.
[00:10:58] Trevor Long: Yeah, take your word for it.
[00:10:59] Stephen Fenech: So that’s how versatile she is. Uh, Paul Rudd plays David. He was in This Is 40. He was also in— he’s in, uh, Marvel Universe. He’s Ant-Man. He was in another good movie too called I Love You, Man. I Love You, Man. I love you. Seth Rogen plays Cal. He was in Superbad.
[00:11:17] Trevor Long: Yep.
[00:11:18] Stephen Fenech: Pineapple Express. And recently on Apple TV, The Studio.
[00:11:21] Trevor Long: Yeah.
[00:11:21] Stephen Fenech: And there was also Romany Malco, who played one of the dudes in the store. Leslie Mann, who’s actually Judd Apatow’s wife.
[00:11:28] Trevor Long: All right.
[00:11:28] Stephen Fenech: Elizabeth Banks, remember the girl in the bookshop?
[00:11:30] Movie Audio: Yep.
[00:11:31] Stephen Fenech: Jane Lynch, who was the horny, uh, woman in the, in the store, who was also in The Office. There you go. And, uh, Jonah Hill.
[00:11:37] Trevor Long: Jonah Hill. Like, there’s a bit—
[00:11:39] Stephen Fenech: the bit—
[00:11:39] Trevor Long: I’m like, yes, I looked it up. I’m like, that’s like his second role.
[00:11:43] Stephen Fenech: Like, one of his early roles. And look what he went on to.
[00:11:45] Trevor Long: Even the daughter of Trish is recognizable.
[00:11:50] Stephen Fenech: She was in the two, the girls that worked in the diner. I can’t remember the name of it.
[00:11:55] Trevor Long: Yes, Two Broke Girls or something like that.
[00:11:56] Stephen Fenech: That’s the one.
[00:11:57] Trevor Long: And then the other one I recognized, David’s girlfriend Amy. She’s also from The Office.
[00:12:04] Stephen Fenech: That’s right. Yeah. Mindy Kaling. Yeah, right. Yeah.
[00:12:06] Trevor Long: She’s from The Office too. There you have it.
[00:12:08] Movie Audio: See, see.
[00:12:09] Stephen Fenech: And Kevin Hart.
[00:12:11] Movie Audio: Hello?
[00:12:11] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, well, that was customer that just chucked in that as well. Yeah, yeah, that was— so this was— when did this come out? 2005. So he was early, early in his career.
[00:12:19] Trevor Long: It’s crazy.
[00:12:20] Movie Audio: Wow.
[00:12:21] Stephen Fenech: Righto, before we jump into the top scenes, let’s have a chat about Hisense. And you know what, the range of TVs Hisense offer— they’ve got their mini LED TVs, but they’ve also got the new RGB mini LEDs. And as it says in there on their website, beyond definition Beyond Color. And you know what, the RGB Mini LED backlight creates not only the brightness but also the color. So picture quality, next level. Color accuracy, next level. It’s also driven by the Hi View AI Engine 2, which controls all the RGB backlights. It’s the traffic cop of all those cells and makes the picture pop. But you know what, it’s not all about picture quality. Sound quality is important too. It’s got a 4.1.2 multi-channel surround sound. So unlike other TVs, there’s no need to add a soundbar. This thing sounds good on its own, and whether you’re watching a movie or watching sport, playing a game, it’s going to sound amazing. So the RGB Mini LED is available in a range of sizes and a range of— there’s different levels of the RGB Mini LED, so it is still within reach of all customers. Check it out for yourself in a store. You won’t— you need to see it to believe it. Or check it out at hisense.com.au. Au. Okay, uh, let’s get started here. Now I love how they establish who Andy is, what he does. He’s got these little morning routine, highly regimented, single, lives on his own, wakes up, does a bit of exercise, makes himself a little omelette, little neat little omelette with these little cut-up fruit. Yeah, sits at the table, uh, we see his massive collection of pristine boxed action figures.
[00:14:02] Trevor Long: You immediately realize this guy’s the virgin.
[00:14:05] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, I’m thinking I want some of those figures, by the way. And he rides a bike to work as well.
[00:14:10] Movie Audio: Yes.
[00:14:11] Stephen Fenech: So then when he gets to— he works at Smart Tech. I knew you would appreciate this. Yes, he works as a stockroom supervisor at Smart Tech, an electronics retail store. And we meet his quirky co-workers, uh, David, who’s depressed over an ex, Jay, an overly confident womanizer, and Cal, uh, the cynical delivery guy. Uh, they gather back in the office, funny enough, to help Andy fit in. They invite him into a poker game with Jay and David, and the conversation inevitably turns to their past sexual exploits. But this was funny— when it turns to, uh, for Andy’s turn to share, I think he panics and fabricates an incredibly awkward story.
Movie Clip — Andy’s fabricated sexual exploit story (poker game)
[00:14:58] Movie Audio: I dated this girl for a while, and she was really a nasty freak. She just loved to get down with sex all the time. She was like, any time of day, she was like, “Yeah, let’s go! I’m so nasty!” And I’d be nailing her.
[00:15:15] Movie Audio: Oh, shit.
[00:15:16] Movie Audio: She’d be like, “Oh, you’re nailing me!
[00:15:18] Movie Audio: Cool!” She talk dirty to you?
[00:15:20] Movie Audio: Oh, she loved dirty talk. Totally into it. She’d be like, yeah, let’s screw, let’s— I wanna fuck. God, it was so dirty.
[00:15:33] Movie Audio: She’d be like, oh, me so horny, me love you long time.
[00:15:39] Movie Audio: So what was the titties like?
[00:15:40] Movie Audio: Yeah, describe her.
[00:15:42] Movie Audio: Yeah, oh yeah, she had great tits.
[00:15:44] Movie Audio: Oh no, no, no, but I mean like detail though. Does she have like, you know, them little pink teeny nipples?
[00:15:49] Movie Audio: Oh yeah.
[00:15:49] Movie Audio: Or like the long National Geographic nipples? Long. You have like the bumpy Braille nipples of Stevie Wonder’s?
[00:15:54] Movie Audio: Yeah, they were nice. You know, when you like, you grab a woman’s breast and it’s— and you, you feel it and it feels like a bag of sand when you’re touching it.
[00:16:08] Movie Audio: Bag of sand.
[00:16:09] Trevor Long: This is where he loses them all.
[00:16:11] Movie Audio: You know what I mean. Why don’t we just play? Why don’t we just deal with cards?
[00:16:16] Movie Audio: Bag of sand.
[00:16:17] Stephen Fenech: But the guys immediately see through the lie, and, uh, you know what?
[00:16:21] Trevor Long: Yeah, they’re on to him.
[00:16:22] Stephen Fenech: It’s not hard to do it, not hard to understand.
[00:16:25] Movie Audio: Hold up, hold up, hold up. Yo, answer this question. Are you a virgin? Are you a virgin?
[00:16:33] Movie Audio: Yeah, yeah, not since I was 10.
[00:16:35] Movie Audio: It all makes sense. You’re a virgin.
[00:16:38] Movie Audio: I am.
[00:16:39] Movie Audio: Shut up.
[00:16:40] Movie Audio: How does that happen?
[00:16:41] Trevor Long: He’s a fucking virgin.
[00:16:42] Movie Audio: I knew it. That makes so much sense, man.
[00:16:44] Movie Audio: Look, he’s a virgin.
[00:16:46] Movie Audio: You guys are hilarious. All right, all right, all right.
[00:16:47] Movie Audio: Come on, don’t be mean. I’m not being mean. I’m trying to help the partner out. I’m trying to say I want to get you laid, dude. I understand what’s going on.
[00:16:53] Movie Audio: You guys are so up your asses.
[00:16:56] Movie Audio: From now on, your dick is my dick.
[00:16:58] Stephen Fenech: I’m getting you some pussy.
[00:17:01] Trevor Long: What a wingman. So they— from now on, your dick is my dick.
[00:17:05] Stephen Fenech: They vow to help him lose his—
[00:17:06] Trevor Long: they’re sort of—
[00:17:07] Movie Audio: he’s—
[00:17:07] Stephen Fenech: they’re gonna help him lose his virginity. Uh, so I love this bit. There’s a flashback to Andy in his youth and his failed attempts to lose his virginity. Did you see this bit where one includes a premature arrival?
[00:17:19] Movie Audio: Yes.
[00:17:20] Stephen Fenech: And the second involves kicking a woman in the face.
[00:17:22] Movie Audio: Yep.
[00:17:22] Stephen Fenech: Who was going to— she said, I’m going to suck your toes. Uh, so yeah, she— he ends up kicking her in the face and I think knocking her teeth out as well.
[00:17:30] Trevor Long: But then they go out, they go to a club and they’re just like, you’ve got to meet someone here. And he can’t— like, he does. She’s gorgeous. There seems nothing crazy wrong with her, but he was told ‘You just got to get the drunk ones,’ you know. That’s basically what he was told.
[00:17:43] Stephen Fenech: So they go out to the nightclub, and they actually— he does exactly that. He meets a heavily intoxicated woman named Nikki, and she’s like— and then when they leave, she’s like, ‘You drive.’ And he goes, ‘I don’t know, I don’t have a car.’ ‘That’s right, I’ll drive.’ And she’s off her face drunk, bad. And, uh, they— the ride home is terrifying. They crash, uh, and, and, uh, he’s, uh— she starts aggressively vomiting on him.
[00:18:05] Trevor Long: Yeah, it’s pretty, pretty disgusting. It’s like slime.
[00:18:08] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, not good.
[00:18:08] Movie Audio: Good.
[00:18:09] Stephen Fenech: Uh, back at Smart Tech, uh, a woman named Trish walks in looking for a VCR.
[00:18:15] Trevor Long: Andy assists her, and he’s not meant to be on the show floor. He’s not a salesman.
[00:18:18] Stephen Fenech: I love how the other blokes dodged it. Maybe goes, I’m sorry, no problem, no hablo inglés.
[00:18:22] Trevor Long: So basically what that does is it puts up the measure that they’re not— she’s not their sort. Yes, but they’re going to throw Andy into the mix.
Movie Clip — Andy meets the eBay reseller neighbour
[00:18:29] Movie Audio: Okay, God, you know, it’s so funny, I work right across the street and I’ve never been in this place.
[00:18:34] Movie Audio: Oh really?
[00:18:34] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:18:35] Movie Audio: Where at?
[00:18:35] Movie Audio: Oh, uh, the We Sell Your Stuff on eBay store.
[00:18:38] Movie Audio: Oh, that’s the name?
[00:18:41] Movie Audio: Yeah, yeah, I was looking for something, you know, um, obvious, so I chose that.
[00:18:46] Movie Audio: I don’t understand, so what, you do what?
[00:18:49] Movie Audio: Well, I take the stuff that you don’t want and then I sell it on eBay.
[00:18:53] Movie Audio: So, but you don’t actually sell anything in the store?
[00:18:55] Movie Audio: Um, no, no, no, I don’t.
[00:18:58] Movie Audio: So why do you have a store?
[00:19:01] Movie Audio: I don’t know.
[00:19:02] Movie Audio: No, I think it’s because, you know, I want to maybe look professional and not like a crazy person who’s just gonna steal all your shit.
[00:19:09] Movie Audio: Sure.
[00:19:09] Movie Audio: I didn’t mean anything by that.
[00:19:11] Movie Audio: No, no, it’s okay. You know what? You should come by sometime if you want, you know.
[00:19:15] Movie Audio: All right.
[00:19:16] Movie Audio: See for yourself.
[00:19:17] Movie Audio: Check it out. I’ll check out your empty store.
[00:19:20] Movie Audio: Yeah, it’s the one across the street that’s not empty. Here’s my number, so. All right, so just anytime.
[00:19:29] Movie Audio: Um, why do I need your number if you’re across the street?
[00:19:32] Movie Audio: Um, I don’t really have a good answer for that, Andy. I’m just sorry, just giving it to you.
[00:19:39] Stephen Fenech: He’s just got no idea.
[00:19:41] Trevor Long: He’s got no idea. He doesn’t realize what’s just happened.
[00:19:44] Stephen Fenech: My, uh, my interjections, yeah, are going to be called carnal knowledge. Okay, yeah, mate, that’s one of my best Uh, the We Sell Your Stuff on eBay store was a real store.
[00:19:56] Trevor Long: No.
[00:19:57] Stephen Fenech: Yes, it was written into the script after the location was chosen. This is real because it was there. I’ll tell you later where they filmed it and they saw it and they go, we’re going to use that.
[00:20:07] Trevor Long: That’s why.
[00:20:08] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:20:09] Stephen Fenech: A few days later, Andy, maybe tries to call Trish, but she chickens out.
[00:20:13] Trevor Long: He chickens out.
[00:20:14] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, yeah, he chickens out. Correct. Next up, they decide Andy needs a bit of a makeover.
[00:20:21] Trevor Long: Honestly.
[00:20:22] Stephen Fenech: And the guys take him to a salon. It’s crazy. I’m laughing already. They take him to get his heavily forested chest waxed.
Movie Clip — The chest waxing scene
[00:20:31] Movie Audio: So this is your first time getting body waxed?
[00:20:34] Movie Audio: Yes, yes, it is.
[00:20:35] Movie Audio: Take off your shirt.
[00:20:36] Movie Audio: Okay. Oh, we’re gonna need more wax.
[00:20:41] Movie Audio: This is gonna be good.
[00:20:43] Movie Audio: Clear all my appointments in the afternoon.
[00:20:46] Movie Audio: Here we go.
[00:20:48] Movie Audio: Oh, that feels warm.
[00:20:49] Movie Audio: So, ready? Yeah. Itchy. Oh, you fucker!
[00:20:58] Movie Audio: Oh, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. That’s just your job, huh? No, no, no, no, it’s okay. Uh, let’s do another.
[00:21:07] Movie Audio: That one little patch looks sexy. Sexy dough.
[00:21:09] Movie Audio: Does it look good?
[00:21:09] Movie Audio: Yeah, it looks really good.
[00:21:12] Movie Audio: Okay.
[00:21:14] Movie Audio: Wow, I didn’t expect that at all. I really didn’t expect that.
[00:21:18] Movie Audio: You ready? Yep. It’s me, the cock sucker, motherfucker!
[00:21:26] Movie Audio: You shithead!
[00:21:27] Movie Audio: Oh, I hate you! I hate you so much!
[00:21:30] Movie Audio: You—
[00:21:31] Movie Audio: that one hurt.
[00:21:33] Movie Audio: That one hurt just as much That’s the first one.
[00:21:35] Movie Audio: 1, 2, 3. Ah, fuck me in the ass! Wowee, that—
[00:21:49] Movie Audio: I’m sorry, I really don’t swear this much. Where did Jay go? He went to throw up.
[00:21:54] Movie Audio: Ready? Yep. 1, 2, cock sucker motherfucker! You pulled on too!
[00:22:04] Trevor Long: You pulled on too!
[00:22:05] Movie Audio: Freddy Piehole! Komaseyama! No! Kelly Clarkson!
[00:22:11] Trevor Long: Now I got to say, yeah, I’m sure you’ll tell me now or later, but there’s no way that wasn’t entirely basically ad-libbed because that was real.
[00:22:19] Stephen Fenech: He, my carnal knowledge here, he was really waxed for the movie.
[00:22:23] Trevor Long: Yeah, there was nothing you couldn’t— you couldn’t fake that. You couldn’t fake the makeup of it.
[00:22:27] Stephen Fenech: 5 cameras set up. Done in one take, right? They just filmed it all.
[00:22:31] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:22:32] Stephen Fenech: And he said, Steve Carell said, I want to have the real wax. And he said, it won’t be funny if it’s a special effect. It needs to be real. Yeah. Now, do you remember when Jay— maybe said, where’d Jay go? Yeah. Now, Romany Malco, who plays Jay, literally had to leave, felt sick and had to go, right?
[00:22:47] Movie Audio: He—
[00:22:47] Stephen Fenech: that wasn’t acting.
[00:22:48] Trevor Long: He was sick, right?
[00:22:50] Stephen Fenech: And according to Mika Mia, who is the woman waxing, took 3 or 4 hours to shoot the scene. Pain, and that some of the— some of them had to actually be trimmed in advance to reduce his pain. They had to trim it back a little bit.
[00:23:03] Trevor Long: Yeah.
[00:23:03] Stephen Fenech: So it’s not as painful.
[00:23:04] Trevor Long: I was gonna say, because you normally, from what I’ve heard and seen, you don’t trim long hair like that with wax.
[00:23:09] Stephen Fenech: And after he blurted out Kelly Clarkson’s name. Yeah. Kelly Clarkson had told Seth Rogen in some interview that it would be literally the one thing that people know me from, despite— regardless of anything else I did. That’s one thing they’re going to remember me from.
[00:23:24] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:23:26] Trevor Long: Anyway, wow.
[00:23:28] Stephen Fenech: Cal takes Andy into a nearby bookstore. This is a really funny scene where an attractive woman works, and he tells him the best approach is to answer her questions with questions.
Movie Clip — The bookstore “answer with a question” scene
[00:23:40] Movie Audio: Can I help you?
[00:23:43] Movie Audio: I don’t know, can you?
[00:23:47] Movie Audio: Are you looking for something?
[00:23:48] Movie Audio: Is there something I should be looking for?
[00:23:55] Movie Audio: Um, oh, we have a lot of books, so maybe it depends on what you like.
[00:24:05] Movie Audio: What, uh, what do you like?
[00:24:09] Movie Audio: We have a great, um, section of do-it-yourself.
[00:24:14] Movie Audio: Do you like to do it yourself?
[00:24:18] Movie Audio: Sometimes.
[00:24:19] Movie Audio: I mean, if the mood strikes.
[00:24:25] Movie Audio: How is the mood striking you now?
[00:24:34] Movie Audio: What’s your name?
[00:24:36] Movie Audio: What’s your name?
[00:24:38] Movie Audio: I’m, uh, Andy. Andy, don’t tell on me, okay, Andy?
[00:24:50] Movie Audio: I won’t, unless you want to be told on.
[00:24:56] Trevor Long: Beth, it’s a good scene.
[00:25:01] Stephen Fenech: I love that right after you get that— I can’t believe that actually works. Next scene is David bringing over his big box of porn. Yeah, to see if he can help Andy along.
[00:25:11] Trevor Long: And Andy’s not happy about that. Andy does not want his big box of porn. Like, frankly, I don’t want it.
[00:25:16] Stephen Fenech: I’m not, I’m not a porn guy, I think is what he’s trying to say. But you know what, Andy sets himself up that night but just can’t go through with it. And I love the little scene there where he’s— the porn actress is actually talking to him. Do you remember that bit? Yeah, that actress— here’s my carnal knowledge here— uh, when he’s home watching an adult film, the actress seen in the film that’s talking to him is Stormy Daniels. Oh wow, the woman who accused or had Trump again with, uh, with that, with Mr. Trump there.
[00:25:42] Trevor Long: Wow.
[00:25:42] Stephen Fenech: A little while ago. All right, next up is a speed dating event. Jay takes Andy to a speed dating event and he’s completely out of his element and he encounters a series of eccentric women, including one who is oblivious of an obvious nipple.
[00:25:56] Trevor Long: The best part of that is just him continually adjusting his shirt, you know, he’s just continually—
[00:26:01] Stephen Fenech: if you look closely, there’s like, you can see the wire in her shirt pulling it down. There’s like someone’s off, off camera.
[00:26:06] Trevor Long: I wasn’t looking at the wire.
[00:26:08] Stephen Fenech: Now just on the edge of it shirt, you could see someone strategically pulling it down.
[00:26:12] Trevor Long: Again, the edge of the shirt was not in my shot. Okay, okay. But this is where you also, you meet, um, uh, is it Dave? What’s the other guy’s name? Um, the ex. Yeah, the ex.
[00:26:24] Movie Audio: Yeah, yeah.
[00:26:25] Stephen Fenech: And, uh, I think Cal has a go at her saying, leave him alone, you’re driving him crazy. Yeah. Now I think here, this scene here is, I don’t think in your version. They invite Andy to a party in a hotel room. They go party in the hotel. When he arrives, they’ve booked him a transvestite hooker.
[00:26:39] Trevor Long: No, that’s in there.
[00:26:40] Stephen Fenech: Was that in there? Okay, you must have watched the extended version.
[00:26:43] Trevor Long: Oh really? Jesus.
[00:26:44] Stephen Fenech: Okay, right. Uh, finally, uh, he— Andy gets the courage to ask Trish out. Uh, his friends are over. Remember when he says— he’s on the phone to her in another room, remember? And they’re playing, do you know, you know, I know you’re gay, when they’re talking about that.
[00:26:57] Trevor Long: That’s actually a really good scene.
[00:26:58] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, that’s funny. But his friends tell him, they say, look, she’s picking me up in an hour. He goes, what, from here? So they’re thinking, hang on, mate, she can’t see this. You need to do something.
Movie Clip — “You know how I know you’re gay” scene
[00:27:07] Movie Audio: She’s, uh, picking me up in an hour.
[00:27:10] Stephen Fenech: Oh, drag, dude.
[00:27:13] Movie Audio: She’s picking up from here?
[00:27:14] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:27:15] Movie Audio: That’s fucked up, man.
[00:27:16] Movie Audio: Why?
[00:27:17] Movie Audio: Why? Seriously, I mean, look at this place, man.
[00:27:22] Movie Audio: You got—
[00:27:23] Movie Audio: you gotta see this through the eyes of a woman, you know? What is she gonna think when she comes in here? Oh, look, he’s got You’ve got a billion toys.
[00:27:30] Movie Audio: So what?
[00:27:30] Movie Audio: I mean, more video games than a teenaged Asian kid.
[00:27:33] Movie Audio: Psst.
[00:27:34] Movie Audio: All right. Is that The Six Million Dollar Man’s boss?
[00:27:39] Movie Audio: It’s Oscar Goldman.
[00:27:40] Movie Audio: Why do you have that?
[00:27:41] Movie Audio: That’s worth a lot of money. That’s much more valuable than Steve Austin.
[00:27:44] Movie Audio: Well, that may be the case, but none of this shit is sexy, okay?
[00:27:49] Movie Audio: I’m not trying to be sexy, man.
[00:27:50] Movie Audio: I mean, there’s Asia? You framed an Asia poster? How hard did the people at the frame store laugh when you brought that?
[00:27:57] Movie Audio: Do not laugh at me.
[00:27:58] Stephen Fenech: Know why you’re gay?
[00:27:59] Movie Audio: Because you like Asia.
[00:28:00] Movie Audio: You guys, cool it.
[00:28:02] Movie Audio: Way over here, okay?
[00:28:03] Movie Audio: First you relax, okay?
[00:28:05] Movie Audio: Just tell—
[00:28:06] Movie Audio: just stop calming me down and tell me what I should do.
[00:28:09] Movie Audio: Okay, we just take everything that’s embarrassing and we move it out of here so it doesn’t look like you live in Neverland Ranch.
[00:28:14] Trevor Long: And the best part of that is that the, the next shot you see of the room is it’s completely empty and not a single thing left.
[00:28:21] Stephen Fenech: She tries to come in, goes, oh no, no, I’m getting, uh, carpet down. I’m getting put carpet down.
[00:28:26] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:28:26] Trevor Long: Now, but you know what, listening to that, I think I enjoyed that more sitting here with you. That’s why this kind of movie doesn’t need to be watched together.
[00:28:34] Stephen Fenech: Absolutely right. It’s a community watch.
[00:28:36] Trevor Long: We’ve got a book tonight, watch these ones together.
[00:28:38] Movie Audio: Absolutely. Yeah.
[00:28:39] Stephen Fenech: I think the carnal knowledge here too is the entire, you know how I know your gaze scene.
[00:28:44] Trevor Long: Ad-libbed. Completely improvised.
[00:28:46] Stephen Fenech: Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, they said go and they just improvised all of it.
[00:28:49] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:28:50] Stephen Fenech: So Andy and Trish go to a local restaurant and head back to Trish’s place and they’re about to get it on, but Andy doesn’t know how to do it.
[00:28:57] Trevor Long: Very good scene.
[00:28:58] Stephen Fenech: He doesn’t know how to put a condom on.
[00:28:59] Trevor Long: She’s gone into the bathroom and he goes through several, including like blowing one up and then tries to— it’s just putting one over his hole again. I can imagine Adeline struggling.
[00:29:08] Movie Audio: Yep.
[00:29:08] Stephen Fenech: And then you’re right, but then Trisha’s daughter walks in and sees all the condoms on the floor.
Movie Clip — Marla walks in on Andy and Trish
[00:29:14] Movie Audio: Whoa, what’s going on here? Who the hell are you? It’s Andy.
[00:29:19] Movie Audio: Hi, I’m Andy.
[00:29:20] Movie Audio: God, what are you doing? Marla, get the fuck out of my room. I cannot believe You’re allowed to have sex, but I’m not? That is so unfair!
[00:29:28] Movie Audio: I’m gonna head out.
[00:29:29] Movie Audio: You should go. Oh Jesus, how many times did you just do it? Oh my God, no, that’s— I’m so sorry.
[00:29:38] Stephen Fenech: Remember the boyfriend’s there? Dude, teach me. He thinks he’s gone through 8 of them or whatever. He’s thinking he’s a legend. But anyway, uh, Andy and Trish— no, sorry, next up is Paula, the store manager. She sort of sidles up to Andy and says, listen, she’s suggesting that if you want to friends with dinner, comes visit her any time she wants. I think the words she uses is, uh, well, let’s say she goes like, have you heard of fuck buddy? She says, and, uh, he says, uh, no, I’ve not heard of that. But yeah, she was pretty forward with her request there.
[00:30:17] Trevor Long: But Andy, uh, they recover and they go to dinner.
[00:30:19] Stephen Fenech: They, they get back together again. They go for dinner, and Andy is about to tell her.
[00:30:23] Trevor Long: He’s been coached with his mates to tell her.
[00:30:25] Stephen Fenech: He goes ‘Guess pretend you’re telling me.’ And, and he says, ‘Oh, that— oh, that’s interesting.’ Like they were sort of trying to make you feel better. But he’s about to tell her, but she, uh, makes a suggestion.
Movie Clip — Trish suggests waiting on the physical side
[00:30:40] Movie Audio: I really feel like if we decide to do this again, then, um, maybe we should hold off on the physical part for a while.
[00:30:52] Movie Audio: That is a fantastic idea. Why didn’t I think of that?
[00:30:56] Movie Audio: Really?
[00:30:57] Stephen Fenech: Totally.
[00:30:58] Movie Audio: No sex?
[00:30:59] Movie Audio: No.
[00:30:59] Movie Audio: Why do that? Because here’s the thing. From personal experience, I’ve found that sex can really complicate things. And what we should be doing right now is just getting to know each other.
[00:31:10] Stephen Fenech: Yeah.
[00:31:12] Movie Audio: Well, I never thought you’d go for it.
[00:31:14] Movie Audio: I’m going for it. Well, that just is a great idea. Great notion.
[00:31:19] Movie Audio: Are you serious?
[00:31:20] Movie Audio: Look at my face.
[00:31:21] Movie Audio: Look at how serious I am. You see my nostrils? Yeah, that’s serious. Angry.
[00:31:29] Movie Audio: Yeah, you know what, most guys would be saying yeah right now, but like by the third date it’d be, hey baby, I really need to physically express how I feel.
[00:31:39] Movie Audio: Hey baby, you know, three dates, hitting Make it 10. 10 dates.
[00:31:45] Movie Audio: How about 15?
[00:31:47] Movie Audio: 15? Screw your 15. 20 dates.
[00:31:51] Movie Audio: Okay, 20 dates. 20 dates.
[00:31:54] Movie Audio: Okay. This is genius.
[00:31:56] Stephen Fenech: So he’s thinking, oh, he’s off the hook here, right? So he doesn’t have to tell her. Yep. There’s no pressure. He’s thinking, I’m golden.
[00:32:03] Trevor Long: Good times.
[00:32:04] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:32:06] Stephen Fenech: So they’re getting through their dates and the 20th date is approaching. Andy tells Trish he would like to open up his own store.
Movie Clip — Andy’s business idea (selling collectibles on eBay)
[00:32:15] Movie Audio: Like, what do you want to do? What are your dreams? You don’t want to work at Smart Tech for the rest of your life.
[00:32:20] Movie Audio: I, I’ve been working there for a long time.
[00:32:23] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:32:24] Movie Audio: And I’ve been thinking lately that maybe I should open my own store.
[00:32:28] Movie Audio: Really?
[00:32:28] Movie Audio: Yeah. What, what kind of store?
[00:32:30] Movie Audio: Well, like, it’s like, like a stereo store.
[00:32:32] Movie Audio: Oh my God, that is so— why don’t you do that?
[00:32:34] Movie Audio: I don’t I don’t have enough money to do that.
[00:32:36] Movie Audio: What about those collectibles? I bet if you sold those, you could make a lot of money. I just sold a guy’s G.I. Joe for $1,000.
[00:32:44] Movie Audio: Really?
[00:32:45] Movie Audio: Do you have any of those?
[00:32:46] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:32:47] Movie Audio: You do?
[00:32:47] Movie Audio: I have 47 of them.
[00:32:48] Movie Audio: No, you don’t.
[00:32:50] Movie Audio: Yeah, in their original boxes.
[00:32:52] Movie Audio: I could help you sell them on eBay. I mean, I would not take a commission, I swear to God. You could do it. You could totally pull it off.
[00:33:00] Movie Audio: Yeah, let’s do it.
[00:33:00] Movie Audio: Boom!
[00:33:02] Trevor Long: That’s huge.
[00:33:03] Stephen Fenech: That’s $47 grand. Just in GI Joe. He’s got other that are more valuable.
[00:33:08] Trevor Long: Don’t forget Steve Austin’s boss, like he’s got them all.
[00:33:10] Stephen Fenech: Richard Goldman. Is that Oscar Goldman?
[00:33:12] Trevor Long: Oscar Goldman.
[00:33:13] Stephen Fenech: Um, Andy arrives mid-argument between Trish and her teenage daughter Marla.
[00:33:17] Trevor Long: Yeah, she’s filthy, she’s screaming because she mentioned it earlier, she wants to have sex, so she wants to go to the family planning clinic to get birth control.
[00:33:23] Stephen Fenech: Birth control. And Andy volunteers to take her.
Movie Clip — The family planning clinic “outercourse” scene
[00:33:27] Movie Audio: Now, there are a lot of activities that you can engage in without having sex that are both fun and safe.
[00:33:34] Movie Audio: What sort of activities? I think, um, everybody wants to know about the activities.
[00:33:38] Movie Audio: Uh, well, instead of having intercourse, you could have outercourse.
[00:33:43] Movie Audio: Outercourse?
[00:33:44] Movie Audio: Uh, what’s that? Yeah, what is that?
[00:33:47] Movie Audio: Well, outercourse is anything that isn’t vaginal intercourse.
[00:33:51] Movie Audio: I prefer vaginal intercourse.
[00:33:52] Movie Audio: Imaginal intercourse.
[00:33:55] Movie Audio: He really does.
[00:33:57] Movie Audio: Now, there are ways of having sex without intercourse. Uh, let’s see, there are things like body rubbing or dry humping.
[00:34:05] Movie Audio: You could try hump.
[00:34:06] Movie Audio: Uh, there’s masturbation.
[00:34:08] Movie Audio: Masturbation, play with yourself.
[00:34:09] Movie Audio: Mutual masturbation, play with a friend. Deep kissing. Um, there’s erotic massage.
[00:34:15] Movie Audio: Oh, that sounds like it would be nice.
[00:34:17] Movie Audio: Oral sex play.
[00:34:18] Movie Audio: Sounds like my Friday night.
[00:34:20] Stephen Fenech: Oh, shut up, Seth.
[00:34:20] Movie Audio: We went to temple.
[00:34:22] Movie Audio: Okay, are there any virgins here who are thinking about having sex for the first time?
[00:34:27] Movie Audio: Wait, wait. So you’re a virgin?
[00:34:31] Movie Audio: I tapped that.
[00:34:32] Movie Audio: Oh, yeah.
[00:34:33] Movie Audio: You tapped that.
[00:34:34] Stephen Fenech: Seth, what, you think you’re cool with your little Jew fro?
[00:34:37] Movie Audio: We don’t say “tapped that.” What are you talking about, Seth? You know what? I’m a virgin, too. Hey, that’s— we’re virgins too.
[00:34:47] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:34:50] Movie Audio: No, you know what, it’s a personal choice and I don’t think it’s weird at all. You know what your problem is?
[00:34:56] Movie Audio: You’re putting the pussy on a pedestal.
[00:34:58] Stephen Fenech: Which is said by Jay.
[00:34:59] Trevor Long: Yes, that’s right.
[00:35:01] Stephen Fenech: Now my carnal knowledge here is that the counselor at the clinic where Andy takes Marla is played by Steve Carell’s real-life wife.
[00:35:09] Movie Audio: Aww.
[00:35:10] Stephen Fenech: Nancy Carell.
[00:35:10] Trevor Long: That’s hilarious. That makes it so much more hilarious.
[00:35:14] Stephen Fenech: Now on the way home, I think I think Mamala initially thinks he just said that to make her feel better. But on the way home, she asks if he’s really a virgin and he admits it. And he asks her not to tell her mother. So Anderson—
[00:35:25] Trevor Long: Which she does, which she obliges. She never tells her. She never mentions it. She doesn’t say a word. Never comes up.
[00:35:30] Stephen Fenech: Which I thought was gonna— When I first saw her, I’m thinking, oh, she’s just gonna blurt it out.
[00:35:33] Trevor Long: Well, no, here’s the thing. At that point I went, she’s not gonna blurt it out, but it’s gonna come up in one of these arguments or wherever, one of these moments. She’s gonna say, but Mum, you know, but she never did.
[00:35:42] Stephen Fenech: That was fascinating, which I thought. Yeah, but Andy says he’s working on telling her. Uh, good that they got the trust there. Uh, Trish tells Andy, uh, that he can make $100,000 with his collectibles. Yeah, uh, you know, this is my future. Uh, Trish tells him that tonight is their 20th date. It’s go time. Uh, she says she’s falling for him. Yeah, and what does he do? She jumps him and they knock over the collectible boxes and he panics.
Movie Clip — The collectibles fight
[00:36:11] Movie Audio: This is original packaging and And that’s why these things are so valuable. So you don’t screw with that.
[00:36:16] Movie Audio: You really don’t screw with that.
[00:36:18] Movie Audio: Uh-huh.
[00:36:18] Movie Audio: Well, we can wrap them again later, you know.
[00:36:20] Movie Audio: Yeah, I know. But you know what? This is very important that we don’t lose a body. We don’t compromise the integrity of the body.
[00:36:25] Movie Audio: Andy, I’m throwing myself at you, and all you can think about is fucking toys.
[00:36:29] Movie Audio: They’re not fucking toys. This is Iron Man, okay? I got this when I was in second grade. Do you know how hard it is for a kid to not open that?
[00:36:38] Movie Audio: Uh-huh.
[00:36:38] Movie Audio: Important. These are my things and you are trying to make me sell them and I don’t want to.
[00:36:44] Movie Audio: No!
[00:36:44] Movie Audio: And you’re making me.
[00:36:45] Movie Audio: I’m not making—
[00:36:46] Movie Audio: You’re encouraging me to quit my job.
[00:36:48] Movie Audio: I’m not, I’m not trying to— You want me to open a store!
[00:36:51] Movie Audio: You want me to sell everything!
[00:36:52] Movie Audio: You know what?
[00:36:53] Movie Audio: I’m gonna tell you something. I don’t just change like that. I can’t just change for you.
[00:36:57] Movie Audio: I don’t, I’m not trying to change you.
[00:36:59] Movie Audio: I like you. I just, I’m trying to help you grow up, Andy.
[00:37:03] Movie Audio: Well, thanks a lot.
[00:37:04] Movie Audio: I mean, my God, you’re ride a bicycle to work in a stockroom.
[00:37:08] Movie Audio: You know what? I’m not in the stockroom anymore. I’m a floor manager. Okay, and I ride a bike because I like to. Einstein rode a bike.
[00:37:15] Movie Audio: He had a wife who he fucked, by the way.
[00:37:19] Movie Audio: What do I have to do for you to have sex with me? Do you want me to dress up like Thor? I’ll dress up like Thor. I’ll dress up like Iron Man. What do they do?
[00:37:26] Movie Audio: I’ll do it.
[00:37:27] Movie Audio: What?
[00:37:28] Movie Audio: Everything’s always about sex.
[00:37:29] Movie Audio: Why do you want to have sex with me?
[00:37:31] Movie Audio: Why Not— tell me, you tell me the truth. Is it because I have a kid who has a kid? Is that why?
[00:37:36] Movie Audio: No, it’s cool that you’re a grandmother. I love the fact that you’re a grandma.
[00:37:39] Movie Audio: Oh God, you are— you’re a hot grandma. Oh my God, you are so mean.
[00:37:45] Stephen Fenech: I’m gonna play that to Jo. She’s a hot— she’s a hot grandma too.
[00:37:50] Movie Audio: Wow.
[00:37:51] Trevor Long: And she’ll be like, I’ll sell all your things.
[00:37:52] Stephen Fenech: Can you stop playing with your toys?
[00:37:54] Trevor Long: But then you’ll be like, okay.
[00:37:55] Stephen Fenech: She didn’t jump me though, in the middle of all my toy collections.
[00:37:57] Trevor Long: Oh, that’s good.
[00:37:59] Stephen Fenech: Andy goes out with the guys, he’s thinking it’s over, he storms out.
[00:38:03] Trevor Long: So he’s gonna let loose basically.
[00:38:04] Stephen Fenech: He gets on the drink, sees the woman from the bookstore. Yeah, and he’s— remember, he flirted with her and they go back to her place and it’s legit on, it’s dead set on for young and old. But the guys have followed him there.
[00:38:17] Trevor Long: He doesn’t know that.
[00:38:18] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, but she’s taking his gear off, she’s in the bath beckoning him to join, but he just— he just kind of walks through it.
[00:38:24] Trevor Long: There’s a funny moment there where he’s like, how’d you get in here? One of the guys is like, I—
[00:38:28] Stephen Fenech: yeah, they’ve all been there.
[00:38:29] Trevor Long: I went out with her and I still had a key. It’s the same guy that put him up to talking to her in the store. Correct.
[00:38:35] Stephen Fenech: And I love how we all walked out and Cal stays behind and goes, hey, uh, you need a bit of help there? So he stays behind. Uh, so yeah, um, so he’s, uh, can’t go ahead with it. He goes home, finds Trish there at his house, at his place, inspecting his big box of porn.
[00:38:51] Trevor Long: So now she thinks he’s an absolute deviant.
[00:38:54] Stephen Fenech: He’s a lunatic. She thinks he’s a serial killer or something.
[00:38:56] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:38:56] Stephen Fenech: He tells her it’s not what it looks like, and he tells her he loves her. But she storms out and Andy rides his bike frantically across town.
[00:39:05] Trevor Long: It’s like a car chase with a bicycle.
[00:39:06] Stephen Fenech: Yes, that’s right. He takes a shortcut, but unfortunately he crashes through a billboard before confessing.
[00:39:14] Trevor Long: Lying on the ground, she comes over to look after him and he confesses.
Movie Clip — Andy’s confession scene
[00:39:18] Movie Audio: Are you okay?
[00:39:19] Movie Audio: I’m okay. No, I’m not okay. I’m a virgin.
[00:39:27] Movie Audio: A what?
[00:39:30] Movie Audio: I’m a virgin. I always have been.
[00:39:33] Movie Audio: Oh, Andy, is that what all this was about?
[00:39:38] Movie Audio: I’m sorry.
[00:39:39] Movie Audio: You’re just a virgin, that’s all.
[00:39:41] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:39:42] Movie Audio: That’s good. That’s a good thing.
[00:39:46] Movie Audio: I feel stupid.
[00:39:49] Movie Audio: It’s okay. I thought you were trying to kill Me?
[00:39:54] Movie Audio: No.
[00:39:56] Movie Audio: My God, no, I’m not trying to kill you.
[00:40:03] Movie Audio: Aww.
[00:40:04] Movie Audio: Now that’s why I never tried to have sex with you. I was scared, okay? I just— cuz I didn’t know what I was doing. I just didn’t think it would be good.
[00:40:15] Movie Audio: Of course it’ll be good. We We love each other. Really? I love you.
[00:40:31] Movie Audio: Get the fuck out of the road, virgin! Shut up, you fucking jerk!
[00:40:36] Movie Audio: No, that’s okay. That’s all right. Sorry. You know what? For so long I’ve thought that there was something wrong with me because it had never happened, but I realize now that it was just because I was waiting for you.
[00:40:54] Trevor Long: Oh, lovely.
[00:40:57] Stephen Fenech: So they end up getting married on their wedding night and finally loses it.
[00:41:02] Movie Audio: Hello.
[00:41:02] Stephen Fenech: And how funny was it when he’s just dancing joyously? The Age of Aquarius finale is just a joyful music number.
[00:41:09] Trevor Long: It’s just a stupid way to end a funny movie. That’s the kind of people I am.
[00:41:13] Stephen Fenech: I think he’s expressing his joy. He’s, you know, finally relieved of this burden that he found, you know.
[00:41:18] Trevor Long: I understand.
[00:41:19] Stephen Fenech: Singing and dancing. Awesome. Righto, let’s get on to the lines here. Some good ones. Here’s the first one. Remember when he drives home with the drunk woman?
[00:41:26] Movie Audio: Yep.
[00:41:27] Movie Audio: Fucker came out of nowhere. Oh, okay, we’re okay. Wow.
[00:41:36] Movie Audio: Are you okay?
[00:41:38] Movie Audio: Well, are you—
[00:41:38] Movie Audio: what’s the matter?
[00:41:42] Stephen Fenech: She vomits on him.
[00:41:46] Movie Audio: I’m sorry.
[00:41:47] Movie Audio: Oh, that’s okay. I think I kind of had that coming.
[00:41:52] Movie Audio: I’ll still have sex with you if you want.
[00:41:54] Movie Audio: You know what, I think I’m gonna pass on the sex if you don’t mind.
[00:41:57] Stephen Fenech: And then right after that he goes, did you have a daiquiri tonight? Yeah, I thought so. Alrighty, now this is when he’s got He’s got, um, Trish’s number and he’s asking, okay, now what, what do I do?
[00:42:09] Movie Audio: Yeah, it is. Okay, here’s a question: when should I call her?
[00:42:14] Movie Audio: You like her?
[00:42:15] Movie Audio: Yeah, you definitely don’t want to call her.
[00:42:17] Movie Audio: When is the next Olympics?
[00:42:19] Movie Audio: What you just got to do is just get you a bunch of these hood rats, run through them, just knock them out, boom, boom, boom. And once you’ve done slayed like 20, 30 of them hood rats, now you ready to go up to the upper echelon type You know what I mean?
[00:42:31] Movie Audio: I’m not a big hole runner.
[00:42:33] Stephen Fenech: But I could have had 50 of these lines here. It was very hard to narrow it down to 3. Uh, this is probably one of my favorites though.
[00:42:39] Movie Audio: I don’t want this stuff, okay? Because I don’t do that that much.
[00:42:44] Trevor Long: What, masturbate?
[00:42:45] Movie Audio: Yeah. Are you—
[00:42:47] Movie Audio: dude, I’ve jacked it twice since I’ve been here. It’s not a hobby of mine.
[00:42:54] Stephen Fenech: Oh, jacked it twice since I’ve been here. I love that line. All right, how did that happen? Uh, is there a plot hole here? Not really. It’s a little, uh, it’d be silly if you’re a total nerd. Okay, right, yeah, you would have noticed that when Cal and David are playing a game on in Andy’s apartment, Cal is using a Nintendo 64 controller. Yes, but the game is they’re playing is Mortal Kombat: Deception, which is a game that was only released on Xbox, GameCube, and PlayStation, not Nintendo.
[00:43:23] Trevor Long: Just unbelievable.
[00:43:24] Stephen Fenech: Did you not pick that up?
[00:43:25] Trevor Long: I did not because I’m not that much of a nerd.
[00:43:27] Stephen Fenech: Uh, speaker workout, uh, I like the soundtrack, a lot of good songs in this. Um, the, the chases with the chase was pretty good. The drunk drive home, man, that was crazy. That was coming from everywhere. Uh, again, thank God I got a big screen. The drunk drive home. Um, I liked the scenes of the store, really took you back to the early ’90s. Oh yeah, the stores, uh, the store was very well done. Thick bezel TVs and the DVD players, Blu-ray players.
[00:43:54] Trevor Long: I love that he’s like, can we turn this music and this DVD off?
[00:43:57] Stephen Fenech: And she’s like, I’m gonna literally kill myself.
[00:44:00] Trevor Long: He’s gonna shoot the joint up.
[00:44:01] Stephen Fenech: Uh, right, Age of Aquarius time. That was quite, quite good.
[00:44:06] Movie Audio: Yep.
[00:44:07] Stephen Fenech: Uh, now the business. This is a bit of a fact check here.
[00:44:10] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:44:10] Stephen Fenech: Uh, the average age to lose one’s virginity globally—
[00:44:14] Trevor Long: wow—
[00:44:14] Stephen Fenech: uh, ranges between 17 and 20. However, the exact age varies significantly by location and culture.
[00:44:22] Trevor Long: Fair.
[00:44:23] Stephen Fenech: Regional and demographic averages include Australia, average age is between 16 and 18. 18, although the World Population Review put the figure for Australia at 18.1.
[00:44:35] Trevor Long: Wow.
[00:44:35] Stephen Fenech: In the US, uh, the average is 17 to 18 for both men and women. United Kingdom, the medium age of having sex for the first time as of 2023 was 17. Right now, global extremes— though some countries like Iceland have the youngest average, 15.6.
[00:44:55] Trevor Long: Boys, come Come on.
[00:44:56] Stephen Fenech: But India, Singapore, and China report averages closer to 22 and 23.
[00:45:02] Movie Audio: Wow.
[00:45:03] Stephen Fenech: There you go. Don’t know where you fit in, but that’s all good, mate.
[00:45:07] Trevor Long: I’m a good Chinese boy.
[00:45:11] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, we’re— I live in Scandinavia.
[00:45:13] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:45:14] Stephen Fenech: Okay then, right, moving on. Uh, if this movie was made today, it’d be more modern. Would it be in a tech store? Would you keep it in a tech store?
[00:45:21] Trevor Long: Yeah, again, if it was made to be set today, yeah, it’s a— yeah, it’s— it— I mean, you can’t really even do it at Harvey Norman style store. Well, you wouldn’t have, you know, you wouldn’t have, um, the—
[00:45:33] Stephen Fenech: I sold it at eBay. That would be— the store wouldn’t exist because everyone’s doing it, selling them themselves on various platforms.
[00:45:39] Trevor Long: But no, but that’s the joke, right? Okay, the joke is you don’t need the store, you sell it yourself.
[00:45:44] Stephen Fenech: Well, I think to forget the big box of, uh, of, of tapes, there’d be a lot of online. Yeah, there’d be a lot of online.
[00:45:52] Trevor Long: Or he’d just give him a thumb drive.
[00:45:55] Stephen Fenech: Maybe. Every day is a school day. What’s our theme or lesson here? Is it obviously it’s waiting for true love?
[00:46:02] Trevor Long: It’s a very deep theme here.
[00:46:04] Stephen Fenech: This is love v lust.
[00:46:06] Trevor Long: Yes, exactly.
[00:46:06] Stephen Fenech: Love v lust. Yeah, I think waiting—
[00:46:08] Trevor Long: it’s not all about sex.
[00:46:09] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, also generational change, you know.
[00:46:12] Movie Audio: You—
[00:46:13] Stephen Fenech: yeah, he’s, he’s a bit older and still a virgin, so that’s like—
[00:46:16] Trevor Long: it’s also age doesn’t matter. There’s a bit of that there too for her age.
[00:46:20] Stephen Fenech: Maybe age is just a number, even whether you’re a grandmother. Uh, best use of the pause button. Best use of the pause button. Um, well, Andy’s collection, I really stopped a few times and here I had Iron Man, Steve Austin, Oscar Goldman, G.I. Joe, uh, the Marshmallow Man out of Ghostbusters. But the figures that he was— remember the one he goes, I’ve had this since I was in the second grade. Those figures are Mego, M-E-G-O, real, they’re real. And very quite valuable. You know, there’s Iron Man, Superman, all the superheroes, Aquaman, all of them. And they are— they’d sell for like one of those today in the box, mint condition, you’re talking thousands of dollars. Wow.
[00:47:01] Trevor Long: Yeah, crazy.
[00:47:02] Stephen Fenech: Uh, things you might not know, uh, to prepare for the role, Steve Carell lost what, 30 pounds? What’s that about?
[00:47:09] Trevor Long: He did look scary.
[00:47:10] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, what’s that, about 20 kicks?
[00:47:12] Trevor Long: No, no, 15.
[00:47:13] Stephen Fenech: 15 kicks. Because he was— Judd Apatow said, look, we— if you looked, if you looked, he realized that looking— being thin was a good idea because it established that he’s a virgin because he’s shy and not because of his looks.
[00:47:31] Trevor Long: That’s true.
[00:47:32] Stephen Fenech: So if he was a big fat bloke, if he was big, I think he’d be like, yeah, right. Yeah, I decided he needed to trim up.
[00:47:38] Trevor Long: That’s fair.
[00:47:39] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, the electronics store featured in the movie was not a set but a repurposed Staples store that had just shut down.
[00:47:47] Trevor Long: Oh right, yeah.
[00:47:48] Stephen Fenech: And across the road was that real eBay.
[00:47:51] Trevor Long: Crazy.
[00:47:52] Stephen Fenech: Now it comes as no surprise here that a large portion of the dialogue was improvised. Yes, Catherine Keener said in an interview, she said Judd Apatow would never really say cut. Instead he’d say reload. And then when burning through film, he called— she called the experience hysterically funny. She also said you had to kind of lose sense of being self-conscious on that movie because it was sort of an all-in in terms of throwing a joke out, or even the writer would sit behind the monitors behind the curtain.
[00:48:23] Trevor Long: Yeah, yeah, no, you get that, you totally get that vibe.
[00:48:27] Stephen Fenech: Did you notice there’s a— this is, this could be even best use of the pause button too, is that remember at the start when Cal, when Andy— Cal comes in late, yes, sorry I’m late, man, but we went to Tijuana, we went to this— he tells the horse story. If you look closely in the background, you you see Radio Shack brand batteries on the wall right next to him. Yeah, that’s a hard one to miss. What’s the meme? I reckon Kelly Clarkson or you’re a virgin. Remember pointing, you’re a virgin?
[00:48:57] Trevor Long: Yeah, yeah.
[00:48:59] Stephen Fenech: I don’t know, I like the age of Aquarius. That’s a good one.
[00:49:01] Trevor Long: The age, maybe when you’re in the car, you know, I’ll pass on sex.
[00:49:06] Stephen Fenech: I think too when he says, are you putting the pussy on his pedestal? Imagine having like an actual pedestal with a cat on top of it. You’re putting the pussy on a pedestal. Fair, that’d work. By any other name? Nah, this is her first time.
[00:49:20] Trevor Long: This doesn’t sell with that.
[00:49:21] Stephen Fenech: And he loses it.
[00:49:23] Trevor Long: This doesn’t sell without that headline. Yeah, and it’s just so enthralling.
[00:49:27] Stephen Fenech: Well, you think about the successful movies, the title tells you the movie. You don’t have to think about it.
[00:49:33] Trevor Long: Yeah, it makes you want to know what’s this story.
[00:49:36] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, exactly.
[00:49:36] Trevor Long: I need the story of that movie.
[00:49:38] Stephen Fenech: Agreed. So, uh, yeah, that’s the best name.
[00:49:41] Movie Audio: Yeah.
[00:49:41] Stephen Fenech: Uh, the one thing you want— well, the one thing— all the things I want, his collectibles.
[00:49:45] Trevor Long: Of course you’re gonna want his collectibles.
[00:49:46] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, I’ll take his bike.
[00:49:48] Trevor Long: I’d take a flat-screen TV.
[00:49:49] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, I’ll take a game— his gaming chair.
[00:49:52] Trevor Long: Pretty good. That was pretty cool.
[00:49:54] Movie Audio: Yep.
[00:49:55] Stephen Fenech: Anything else there?
[00:49:56] Movie Audio: No.
[00:49:57] Stephen Fenech: All righty, 3 questions for Trev.
[00:49:59] Trevor Long: All right, hit me.
[00:50:00] Stephen Fenech: What happens to Andy and Trisha? They live happily ever after.
[00:50:02] Trevor Long: Long and happy life.
[00:50:03] Stephen Fenech: Yeah, they just That’s nice, I agree. Uh, question 2: sequel, prequel, or leave it alone?
[00:50:09] Trevor Long: I mean, you could probably sequel it, but I feel like it should just be left alone.
[00:50:13] Stephen Fenech: My last carnal knowledge for you is the producers planned a sequel, right, by the name of Knocked Up, but with almost the same cast. But what they ended up doing is they released Knocked Up as a separate movie with no relation to this one. So Knocked Up is with Seth Rogen and And I forget the woman, the actress’s name, but she, it’s the story of their one night stand and she gets pregnant and then all the other stuff that goes around that. Right, yeah.
[00:50:39] Movie Audio: Yeah. Okay.
[00:50:40] Stephen Fenech: Question 3, too long, too short, or just right?
[00:50:43] Trevor Long: You know what, weirdly, I think it could have been tighter.
[00:50:45] Stephen Fenech: I think it could have been tighter too. This was actually one of his longest films. Tarantino normally makes, you know, it could have been shorter. Sharp.
[00:50:51] Trevor Long: Could have been tighter.
[00:50:53] Stephen Fenech: Righto, give us, that was 40-Year-Old Virgin.
[00:50:56] Movie Audio: Origin.
[00:50:57] Stephen Fenech: Give us your wrap-up and rating.
[00:50:58] Trevor Long: Good bunch of laughs, enjoyable, great, very quotable. Oh yeah, I’d love to have a good memory where I could remember those things because they are great lines. Uh, I could rewatch it.
[00:51:08] Stephen Fenech: Do you know why I know you’re gay?
[00:51:11] Trevor Long: Um, it’s a 7 for me.
[00:51:13] Stephen Fenech: I’m an 8. Yeah, I thought you would be actually.
[00:51:15] Trevor Long: If I could predict, I would have said you were an 8.
[00:51:18] Stephen Fenech: All right, now let’s talk about next week. Another solid change of gears here.
[00:51:23] Movie Audio: Oh Really?
[00:51:23] Stephen Fenech: Next week we are watching Ex Machina, all right, released in 2014, starring Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, written and directed by Alex Garland. Now it’s a movie about, you know what, that was made in 2014 but could have been made yesterday, real, in terms of the theme of it— AI, oh, robotics and all that sort of stuff. It’s very interesting. Very— it’s not— I know you don’t cringe, but it’s, it’s a very thought-provoking movie as well. Okay, my question for you though: Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson co-stars.
[00:52:03] Trevor Long: Never heard of them.
[00:52:04] Stephen Fenech: What other movie did Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson co-star in shortly after Ex Machina? Is it A, About Time, B, Inside Llewyn Davis, C, The Force Awakens, or D, A Most Violent Silent Year.
[00:52:22] Trevor Long: B.
[00:52:23] Stephen Fenech: Inside Llewyn Davis.
[00:52:24] Movie Audio: No idea.
[00:52:24] Stephen Fenech: Wrong. It’s The Force Awakens. They’re in— he plays—
[00:52:26] Trevor Long: that would have been my last pick.
[00:52:28] Stephen Fenech: He plays Poe Dameron. Oscar Isaac plays Poe Dameron. Domhnall Hall plays, uh, Officer Hux.
[00:52:33] Trevor Long: Yeah, no, big characters in my life.
[00:52:35] Stephen Fenech: Boom. Wow, mate. I’m thinking the fact that I put in a Star Wars— I thought you would have put me straight into it.
[00:52:43] Trevor Long: You’re trying to help me with a crap answer.
[00:52:45] Stephen Fenech: One day you’ll be able to answer all these questions because you’re building up your library anyway. But my memory’s That was The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Yeah, uh, and I hope you enjoyed it. Trevor reminisced very hard, very frankly through that movie. Uh, but let’s, let’s meet up again next week for— all right, see you then. Bye-bye.
