Google Unveils Googlebooks: Premium Laptops Built for Android and Gemini Intelligence

Google is launching their long awaited line of Googlebooks announced back in May, a new category of premium laptops designed to work with your Android phone.

Googlebooks will be launching in Australia soon, with pre-orders opening today with devices from HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and ASUS starting from $2,299 RRP expected to be on-shelf on October 5th in Australia. 

Googlebooks is being positioned as a premium laptop option for Android phone users, with ‘Googlebook OS’ built on the Android technology stack and building on the ChromeOS desktop experience. They’re also designed with Gemini Intelligence to bring you features including Rambler, Google’s improved voice-to-text feature and more. The platform will receive long-life support, with Google saying each device will receive regular feature drops and updates for Googlebook OS for up to 10 years from launch.

Google says that the laptops are ‘engineered to work with your Android phone right out of the box’. To ensure Android users get a premium experience, Googlebooks include access to millions of Android apps, with the Chrome browser bringing all your desktop extensions and more. 

Google says they have refined the Android app and even the game experience on Googlebooks, ensuring ‘many of them’ have been optimised for the large screen experience and using mouse and keyboard input. Google will have more than 20,000 games available at launch thanks to Android, and the Googlebooks are optimised for GeForce Now for more remote play options.

Google will again be courting PC game devlopers with Googlebooks, promising AAA PC Games will be able to seamlessly come directly to Android in a feature they’ll be launching soon.Yeah,

The Android experience will also see your Android phone’s settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and messages transfer seamlessly back and forth using end-to-end encryption to your new Googlebook.

Having this secure back and forth will give you the ability to see, and run all the apps on your phone – already logged in and ready to continue on from where you left off on your phone, as well as being able to access all the files on your phone.

Built with Gemini Intelligence in mind, the Googlebook line-up includes processors offering up to 40+ TOPS of on-device AI processing, powering features including custom widgets, as well as the new Magic Pointer feature. 

A rethink of the classic mouse cursor, Google’s Magic Pointer can use Circle to Search around anything in the display, or you can simply ‘wiggle your mouse cursor’ to call Gemini to take a look at what’s on your screen. 

Gemini will do a range of tasks, including organising a messy calendar or translating text on-screen without having to flick between multiple windows. Google says that Gemini will only show up when you ask it to, and you can switch it off whenever you want.

The laptops will a premium experience, using materials like aluminium, magnesium alloy, and carbon fibre and are powered by Intel and Qualcomm processors promising battery life over 14 hours, with MediaTek options coming soon.

Googlebooks will have a baseline of 16GB RAM with options for up to 32GB and SSD storage options from 256GB upwards, with the five manufacturers on-board offering multiple form-factors with backlit keyboards and touch display options.

The initial range includes an ultra-compact 13-inch design from Dell, versatile 2-in-1 convertible from ACER, with Dell offering an immersive 15.3” display. ASUS and HP are offering gorgeous hardware, with ASUS offering a super-light, 1kg model with 14” display, while HP’s all Aluminium design is gorgeous. 

The Googlebooks will also launch Google’s Glowbar. Similar to the Google light bar,from their early Pixelbook and Pixelbook LS Chromebooks, the Google Glowbar expands the functionality even more. The Globar will still show sweeps to show your battery level, but it can also do cool animations when you’re talking to Gemini. 

To use Gemini, Google is including 12 months of Google AI Pro with 5TB of cloud storage and Gemini Advanced tools, as well as 3-months of YouTube Premium – though all the offers are subject to being ‘for eligible new users’.
