Kogan goes ‘Smart’ “ish” TV

Kogan have this morning launched an android based set top box to connect your Big Screen TV to the Internet.

Another one of those ‘customers also bought this’ kind of up sell products for his TV buyers, the Agora Internet TV Portal is a simple little box, with slimline remote that allows you to surf the web, play games and social media on your TV screen.

WEBTV from 1995 anyone?

If the simple remote won’t do you, Kogan is also selling a Qwerty keyboard remote with touchpad mouse controls for just $39 which would be a great companion device.

Why would you want to surf the web on your TV?  I’m not yet entirely sure!

Why would you want the power of Android on your TV? Well that has some more legs on it..

Certainly streaming Web videos and YouTube through a full flash browser will mean a loungeroom experience for those Web Videos or Catch Up TV, but is that enough of an argument to get on?

At $199 (or starting at $149 on ‘live price’) you’d want to be keen I’d think.

This is all happening as Samsung, LG, Panasonic etc all go “Smart TV” on us, so Kogan needs to stay competitive here.   I assume it won’t be long until this is built into his TV’s, but until then, this little set top box will keep you interested.

Kogan doesn’t do product for fun – he monitors google keyword searches for products, knows what we’re looking for and then brings it to market.  He’ll be confident he can ship what he builds – the question is, can it compete in the medium term with the vast array of truly “Smart TV’s” out there?

I’ll grab one soon and let you know!
