Glass corks are the future for (expensive) wine

The days of buying a nice bottle of plonk and sniffing the cork to test its virility may be dead, but soon you might be able to do the same thing anyway. Instead of screw tops, winemakers are moving to use glass corks in their bottles.

According to an interview on The Shout, Barossa Valley winemaker Stephen Henschke has opted to move to a new corking system called Vino Lok. The glass stopper offers the same staining on the bottom as a traditional cork, which “brings back the ceremony and the cultural heritage part of wine and it looks the part,” according to Henschke.

It also looks amazing, and can be badged with an individual winemaker’s seal. Of course, it’s also going to be a lot more pricey than a screw cap, meaning that it will probably only appear in premium wines in the near future.
