New Star Trek Into Darkness teaser poster doesn’t look good for Earth (UPDATED with trailer!)

JJ Abrams is something of a genius. After almost bringing me to tears with the opening sequence of his Star Trek reboot back in 2009, he’s back with a sequel next year, and the first teaser poster shows its promise.

UPDATE: The first trailer just landed. Wow.

Star Trek Into Darkness is set to hit cinemas in May 2013, and as you can see from the poster and the official synopsis below, things look mighty bleak for earth.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The last Trek film was a brilliant combination of measured storytelling, amazing acting and likeable characters across the board. It’s going to be a tough act to follow, but somehow this ltiny little snippet of a preview is reassuring that JJ has things under control.
