The Garage – Suzuki Swift Navigator GL

When you drive a Suzuki Swift you start to notice they are seemingly everywhere. In 2014 the popular small hatch scored some relatively minor cosmetic and equipment upgrades. But more newsworthy is the fact Australian delivered Swifts are now sourced from Japan rather than Thailand. EFTM has been getting around in the Swift Navigator GL, one up from the newly named base GL model.

Make: Suzuki

Model: Swift

Variant: Navigator GL

Engine / Transmission: 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol with 4-speed automatic

Vital Stats: 70kW@6,000 rpm / 130Nm @4000rpm.

Suzuki Claimed Fuel Economy: 5.5l / 100km

EFTM Claimed Fuel Economy: TBC

Driveaway Price: $17,490

Wow Factor: It would take some serious haggling to find a cheaper small car equipped with standard satellite navigation. Tidy and dare I say sporty looks make the Toyota Yaris look girly by comparison. A man’s man could almost get away driving this, if equipped with illegal tint.

Most Impressive: High levels of standard kit with a 6.1-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, some voice control features, full Bluetooth connectivity, leather wrapped steering wheel, fog lights, daytime running lights, cruise control, seven airbags and a six-speaker sound system.

Least Impressive: This is no sprinter off the mark; in fact a bunch of kids at an athletics carnival would give the Swift a run for its money over 20-metres. A four-speed auto is hardly what you’d expect in 2014. The cabin is a little noisy on poorer roads; handling is adequate without ever nearing engaging levels.

Early Verdict: The Suzuki Swift has sold globally over four million units since 2004. This particular model is well equipped and sports a decent quality interior. Performance wise it’s a disappointment, but I’d suggest the intended market wouldn’t give two hoots about that!
