Facebook dominates Aussie social media use

When it comes to use of Social Media, Australians are continuing to increase their time staring at devices as Facebook use alone jumps from 8.5 hours a week to 12.5 while almost every other social media struggles behind.

The data comes from Sensis’ annual Social Media survey which is conducted across a pretty solid demographic sample of Australians, looking at everything from the platforms we choose to use, where we use them and what we use them for.

A whopping 95% of people who use social media are using Facebook, with the next best platform is the Facebook owned Instagram at 31% showing the huge gap and Facebook’s dominance.

But it’s the time we’re putting into Facebook that stands out the most

And we’re not just now and then users either, well over half of social media users are doing so each and every day

And home is where the social is – with almost everyone accessing their social sites at home, only 35% at work, and surprisingly for me, just 25% on public transport.

Once again, though the graphic doesn’t show it, there was an admission by many that they’re checking social media on the Toilet too (12%).

The story for business was very positive, with 69% of Australian’s on Social Media there’s a reason to put your efforts in gaining and serving customers.

More than half of small business on social media, rocketing to almost 80% of large businesses.  Importantly though 52% of consumers more likely to trust a brand if they see it interacting positively on social media.

If you’re wondering just where in the home we’re checking Facebook – the data is clear:

And I’m not alone when it comes to checking my Twitter and Facebook first thing in the morning and last thing at night it seems

In the battle of the sexes there’s some interesting stats:

  • Females are more likely to use social media at least once a day (54% vs 47%).
  • Females are more likely to use social media in the home (97% vs 94%), while males are more likely to use social media in all locations outside the home include work (44% vs 26%).
  • Females are more likely to use Facebook, Google+ and Pinterest, while males are more likely to use LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat.
  • Females are more likely to have deleted friends on social media.
  • Females are more likely to think they spend too much time on social media than males (35% vs 26%).
  • Males are twice as likely to use social media on the toilet (16% versus 8%). They are also more likely to use social media in the bedroom (49% vs 36%).
  • Males (307) have more Facebook friends on average than females (240).
  • Males are the most likely to use social media in all locations except for the home
  • Males are more likely to use social media at all times of the day, including first thing in the morning, when working and last thing before they go to bed.
  • Males are more likely to have accepted friend requests from people they don’t know.
  • Males and females are just as likely to have dated someone they met online (10%), but males are more likely to have dumped someone via social media, although this is not common (only 3%).
