Keeping Old School Relevant

With our homes becoming more and more modern and internet connected, some devices are feeling very neglected and discarded. Those who built a collection of vinyl records over the years and those who just love the sound of Miles Davis played on a turntable have been hanging onto their old stereo systems just to keep those moments alive. With Sonos, that doesn’t have to be the only way.

In this house we have a number of Sonos speakers and this is the way music is enjoyed, it’s controlled from an iPhone and the speakers are in multiple rooms. We’ve caught the vinyl bug and bought a few records. Turntables are still easily available and we’ve bought one of those too, but how do we make it work with internet connected speakers?

Sonos Connect

This little box is all you need to connect a turntable, a cassette deck, or anything that can connect through RCA connectors, even your computer. It takes three seconds to get it into your Sonos environment and broadcast music throughout the home.

We’ve connected an Audio Technica turntable with RCA connections to the input of the Sonos Connect, selected Line-In on the Sonos App and the speakers in the house await the needle to touch the spinning vinyl for something Kind of Blue.

The sound quality is absolutely fantastic, as you would expect from your Sonos speakers, even the scratches, glitches and squeaks from the vinyl will be heard, it’s the real deal.

While some might wonder why you wouldn’t just listen to Miles Davis through Spotify or Apple Music, there is still something about vinyl that sets hearts on fire. For someone who didn’t grow up in the age of vinyl, we wondered the same. Once we had it all setup though, we sat and watched a big black disc spin, have a small needle “read” the beats, vocals and send that signal to the Sonos Connect and throughout the house. There is something extremely magical about that.

So now we are on the hunt for more records to listen to, a comfortable listening chair (a brown leather couch perhaps) and wine to swill while Frank Sinatra goes from old school to new.
