Our homes are getting smarter and more connected: nbn Survey reveals

How smart is your home?  How connected are your home devices?  How many devices are connected to your WiFi network at any one time?  The nbn released research yesterday from Telsyte which indicates the number of connected home devices will more than double in the four years ahead.

Telsyte’s “Australian IoT @ Home” Market Study 2016 predicts the average home will have twenty-nine connected devices in four years from now.  That grows from eleven today.  A remarkable 161 percent increase.

This is happening for a couple of reasons, including the roll-out of the nbn network across Australia which will see some four million homes connected by end of 2017 and all Australians by 2020.

Perhaps more critically, the number of smart home devices is growing and the cost of them is coming down.

The research suggests Australian’s believe connecting devices like whitegoods and gardening tools will save money (47 percent think this), and more than half think it will take better care of the environment.

Foad Fadaghi, Telsyte’s principal analyst says: “Spending on smart home products is expected to increase over the coming years as consumers look to save money and improve their lifestyles. Australian households will soon be taking advantage of smart energy sensors, automated gardening systems and robot appliances, all controllable via apps on their smart devices.

“Telsyte believes fast broadband is one of the key enabling technologies that will give consumers the confidence to purchase more smart appliances for their homes”.

With devices like Belkin WEMO, Philips Hue, Air Conditioners, Cameras and other smart devices so easy to set up and use – it’s little wonder the number per household is growing.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, at my home it’s in the high 30’s peaking into the 40’s when everyone is home!
