Next level stuff: Logitech G933 Wireless 7.1 Gaming Headset review

So John took a look at the Logitech G910 Gaming Keyboard, and loved it.  It would have been madness to think that just a keyboard could change the gaming experience so we handed him the G933 Wireless 7.1 Gaming headset too.

Now remember, John loves his gaming – PC gaming at that, scoffed at the idea of Xbox or PS4.  So he’s the perfect person to test out a bit of add-on gaming kit like a keyboard or headset.  Here’s what he thought of the headset:

If you’ve ever played a video game, you’ll know the studios that make these games seek to immerse the player as deeply as they can into the world and experience they’ve created. If immersion is what you seek, I think I have just the answer.

The Logitech G933 RGB is a wireless 7.1 surround sound gaming headset at the high-end of the headset market, and it most certainly delivers. You will be able to pick up this fantastic headset for roughly ~$200 (ed: RRP is $299), which I understand is quite hefty for a “pair of headphones”, but allow me to explain why I believe this to be a very strong addition to the arsenal of any gamer.

First and foremost, before I even turned the thing on, I found that the Logitech G933’s were exceptionally comfortable. As a gamer I can tell you there is nothing worse than being 18 hours into a gaming session and having a headache that rivals the fiercest of migraines, simply because your headset is too tight, or lacking padding. The G933’s have a cloth lining as opposed to leather (which is quite common at it’s price range), which I prefer, however that’s a matter of personal opinion. I found the headset to be quite gripping and quite strong once on the head, that can be extremely useful for gamers that move around while playing.

As is important for any gamer, especially those that like competitive play, the microphone on the G933’s is of very high quality. It is extendable and can be folded up into a small recess in the front of the headset should you want it out-of-the-way. As unbelievable as this may seem, I even received a compliment while playing with this headset that my microphone was incredibly clear, it was exceptional.

One thing that you will find entirely brilliant in the design of this headset is the ease in setup. Now as I’ve mentioned this is a wireless headset, which means that there is a small USB dongle that plugs into the computer, and will automagically connect your headset once you turn it on. Aaaaaaand you’re done. Yes, it’s that simple. Of course if you mean business with this gear you will head directly to the Logitech website and download their incredibly simple driver software to not only provide better support for the G933’s, but also to control the RGB LED’s.

That’s right, the Logitech G933’s are equipped with two rows of RGB LED’s, as well as a Logitech logo all of which can be controlled from the Logitech Gaming Software interface on your PC. It has multiple functions such as:

• Colour Cycle – Fade between each colour of the rainbow.
• Breathing – This fades the specified colour on and off.
• Solid Colour – Simply one solid colour.

The G933’s boast three ‘G-Keys’. These are Logitech’s version of programmable keys that allow you as a user to customise the function of said keys. For example, I could program (extremely easily I might add through the Logitech Gaming Software) ‘G1’ to boot up Counter-Strike when pressed. I could then program ‘G2’ to search for a game and ‘G3’ to close the game (but why would I ever do that?). Personally, I’ve never found a practical use for programmable keys, but in saying that I know plenty of gamers that regularly use them. This may be as they are most useful in both Strategy and MMO games, neither of which I play.

Last but most certainly not least, the quality of audio and surround sound are exceptional. Truly stunning. It is no secret that I am an enormous nerd and have used a fair few wireless headsets in my time, but this one took the cake. I gave the G933’s a good run on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and can attest that I experienced an entirely new style of play. Team mates voice communications sound as though they are directly beside you, gunshots and grenade explosions take shape in 360 degrees, it is a phenomenal experience. Not to mention it provides a large strategic benefit to the dedicated gamer. Having knowledge of the whereabouts of your opponents before seeing them is incredibly useful. I could delve into the exceptional bass and high quality music playback I experienced with this headset, but let’s keep things gaming related.

My only possible criticism of the Logitech G933’s is that the microphone length is a tad too short. Now when the length of the microphone is the only complaint you have with a headset, it’s a dead giveaway that you’re onto a winner. It’s merely personal preference however even fully extended the microphone only made it’s way to about midway of my cheek, where I prefer to keep my mic as close to my mouth as possible.

All things considered, for ~$200, theLogitech G933’s are an absolute steal. Everything from the exceptional microphone quality, to the brilliance of the surround sound and the customisation of the lighting, this headset is perfect for any gamer in need of an upgrade
