Sure, you can buy a Star Wars Droid and have a whole lot of fun – but where’s the educational experience in that? (ok, so the Sphero products have some cool coding outputs and can be super educational) How about building the Droid from scratch!
littleBits the company that uses simple “electronic blocks” has created a Droid Inventor Kit which will retail in Australia for $159 and is all about STEM education.
Kids can build and create a custom droid, using the full R2-D2 instructions or their own creations, and then teach the R2 a whole bunch of new tricks and take it on missions.
The more they use it, the more they learn, the more they “level-up” their inventor expertise to reconfigure their Droid.
It has sensors so it won’t run into things, and can be controlled with “the Force” using similar sensors on the back.
The whole pack comes with 6 Bits, 20 Droid Parts, sticker sheets and access to the free Droid Inventor app.
And don’t worry, R2 makes 20 different sounds you’ll recognise from the Star Wars movies.
“Today we are continuing a global inventor movement that empowers young people to participate in a story that inspires them to be creators, not just consumers of technology,” said Ayah Bdeir, founder & CEO of littleBits.
“We’ve created a gender-inclusive product that celebrates kids’ own self-expression and ingenuity, while showcasing the same characteristics of imagination, grit and invention that are embodied in the Star Wars franchise.”
The Droid Inventor Kit retails for $159.95 and is available today at Harvey Norman, EB Games, Apple Stores and littleBits.com.
