Three years ago I reviewed the Grado Labs SR 80e and had nothing but great things to say. Last year I visited Grado’s humble HQ in Brooklyn to see where they are made, and today I’m testing something very new – Wireless Grado headphones.
These GW100’s are the first product to come out of Grado without a cable, they’re Bluetooth Wireless headphones.
Nope, not noise cancelling, these are made for music lovers. Lovers of great sound, and in 2018 and beyond the cable is a bit naff so it’s an important step forward for Grado.
I have to say they pack a similar sound to the SR80e’s but at a price of $365 they’re not for everyone. Let’s face it, that’s getting close to noise cancelling territory, but as John found recently – in that space you get what you pay for.
So the GW100’s are about sound, sound quality and comfort. Frankly, at $365, they’re great value.
Pairing is easy, though multi-device pairing isn’t well supported, but that won’t bug most people.
Once you’re up and running, they’re sensational. Up to or around 15 hours battery life and that seems to match my usage.
Aussie distributor Addicted to Audio calls them the “only Bluetooth open back headphones” and that’s an important point – not for bragging, but for user info. These are not great in a quiet office, or the train – the open back means the sound doesn’t leak out, it bursts out around you.
These – along with other Grado open-back headphones are for your enjoyment, on the lounge, in the man cave, on your own. When you are immersed, you won’t think of anything else.
I love them – but only when I’m on my own, Bowen sitting next to me is too judgemental about my music for me to have him listening in:)
