How much are you prepared to spend on a good wine? Like most Aussie’s that’s probably a two-digit number. If your pockets are deeper and your taste more refined, there’s an Auction coming up just for your.
The world’s biggest auction of Penfolds wines from retailer Langton is set to break some records.
Called the “Rewards of Patience Auction” for good reason, there are bottles of wine here that have been sitting for 68 years ready for the perfect auction.
Two bottles of the very first Grange vintage (1951) are on offer – set to sell for over $70,000 each.
If that’s not enough, there’s a set of 1951-2014 Grange which are expected to break the $349,500 record for a Penfolds Grange set.
Tamara Grischy from Langton’s said “In 1995, I remember selling a set for $30,000. As the Penfolds brand has continued to evolve and become one of the biggest wine brands in the world, the demand keeps increasing,”
Speaking about the two 1951 vintage bottles Ms Grischny said “It’s very rare to see one bottle, let alone two, of the first Grange, which was a wine that Penfolds first Chief Winemaker Max Schubert made 68 years ago as an experiment. Both bottles are in amazing condition, and have outstanding provenance,”
“This is a historic vintage and represents the beginning of modern Australian wine. It is believed there are less than 20 bottles in circulation,” she added.
Don’t worry though, there are some bottles expected to go for under $30, or perhaps under $60 they reckon you’ll get something too “You might be able to snap up a lovely Penfolds Bin for under $30. For under $60, you can probably get a Penfolds 1998 Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz. It’s drinking beautifully at the moment, and can even be a nice first bottle to start your collection with,”
The Auction starts on December 10th and runs till December 15.
Some good Auction advice too “There’s always a mad rush of bidding in the last 30 minutes, so if you’re after a specific wine, make sure you’re alert on Sunday evening,” Ms Grischy advised.
