Australians are welcoming smart home devices like never before

Recent studies have shown that Australians are increasingly making the move to smarten up their homes – with over 50% of those surveyed suggesting their homes will be converted to ‘smart homes’ by 2025. As the range of products is ever expanding and the price point gets all the more affordable, the nation seems to be significantly more open to the prospect.

A statistic that took me completely by surprise is that the device most commonly recognized as a household smart device in 2019 is the vacuum cleaner! The rise of the small, disk shaped robots running around and cleaning up our floors has been swift and evidently widespread as a whopping 70% of those surveyed identified it as being the sign of a connected home.

That 70% is in comparison to 29% for smart speakers and only 21% for smart lights!

To those of us that have taken the leap into ‘smart home’ territory, it’s incredibly difficult to consider going back to a time before the technology. I know personally, when recent storms knocked out my internet for a few days I was frustrated by how long it took me to turn all of my lights on/off. Millennial problems…

Marc Alexander, Founder of smart light brand LIFX, who commissioned the study has said that “It’s positive there’s appetite in the market – Aussies are definitely early adopters of tech – however consumers are often quick to jump on a trend without fully understanding the benefits or applications, which just proves we have a job to do in terms of educating and arm them with the right information about how to start their smart home journey in the smartest way”.

As far as the layout of the home is concerned, the lounge room is reported to be the most connected of the bunch. This is likely due to streaming devices (Google Chromecast, Apple TV, etc) and the all-inclusive home speakers to entertain.

The ‘dumbest’ room (if you will) in the home is supposedly the bathroom – which we could probably chalk up to the fact that most of us don’t feel comfortable keeping electronics around water sources.

It’s incredibly apparent that moving into 2020, Australians are growing increasingly more comfortable incorporating smart home technology into their homes and into their lives.
