At Facebook Connect overnight, a new Oculus Quest 2 VR Headset has been announced, as well as new VR gaming experiences from Ubisoft.
The Oculus Quest 2 will be available in two models, 64GB for AU$479, while a 256GB model will cost AU$639. The Oculus Quest 2 will be available on October 13th in 22 countries.
The standalone Oculus Quest 2 headset includes four tracking cameras mounted on the front, and the biggest visual change for the Oculus Quest 2 is that it’s now white instead of black.
As well as making the headset lighter (just 503 grams), Oculus is also trying to make their headsets more comfortable by introducing customisable head straps and facial interface add-ons. There’s the ‘Fit Pack’ which includes ‘swappable facial interfaces to fit wider or narrower face shapes’, or the ‘Elite Strap and Battery accessory pack which promises to ‘double the playtime with increased balance and ergonomics’.
Under the hood there’s improved hardware including a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor and 6GB of RAM on-board for improved AI. The display will soon support 90Hz refresh rate at 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye says Oculus, though we’ll have to wait for an update for that.
As far as gaming is concerned, there’s a lot coming with the biggest announcements from Ubisoft who announced Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell will both be getting the VR treatment. Also coming are Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, Jurassic World Aftermath, Medal of Honour and loads more.
One software announcement that stood out for me is the multiplayer expansion pack for Beat Saber. If you know what Beat Saber is, you’ll likely be just as excited as I am.
Oculus is going all in on their PC ‘Link’ which is exiting Beta after extensive testing. The LINK feature lets Oculus Quest users play PC VR games, and the promotion of LINK to full feature release means that Oculus will discontinue the Rift S next year.
